I've had this several times now, latest bottle is from I believe the ever stalwart Jlindros. 12oz. No freshness date.
A. Dingy and darker than I recall, a low 2cm head sticks around for the duration and leaves just a bit o' lace, very respektibble for an American stout. Nothing out of bounds though.
S. Super excellent, sez I. When fresh, this is one of the best 'merkin stouts around. Huge and bold, it belies the (meager) 6.7% abv. Loads of rich chocolate, lots of soothing roast, layered depth, milky sweet, hints of dry cocoa and nuts. Smells better and more complete than lots of so-called "Imperial" stouts.
T. Delivers. Massive flavor for a near-session beer. Delicious semi-dry cocoa / roast flavors dominate, while hints of smoke, lactose, subdued American hop bitterness and what I'm pretty sure are oats orbit the main. Hard to praise specifically, the best beers just have that "magic" that you know when you taste. Everything works together so well, it's a bit shocking. Surely one of the best American stouts around, and a personal second favorite to Shakespeare stout. It is that good, kids.
M. Wet with a solid semi-dry cocoa fade finish, tasteful and mellow, yet "solid"... pulls no punches here... I dunno, try it. Nearly magnificent.
Cadillac Mountain is an amazing dry-ish stout from an otherwise rather average brewery. I don't know exactly what magic is going on in this bottle, but this is an exemplary stout, one worth seeking out and enjoying again and again. What's more, it's delicious. Three cheers all around to this American classic.
