September 20th, 2016 - This beer starts off on the right foot with an epic, memorable and gritty name. Of course a pirate would take their breakfast as liquid bread! And I anticipate something rugged, oily and sharp. The nose is a good start, with jerky spices, and a vineous sharp edge. Once that cranky tannic point blunts itself, it reveals some fig and wet soil aromas. The flavor is much the same, supported by a strong body, and an aftertaste of wet dog. That last part is curious and unexpected, but not entirely out of place with the image of a pirate waking up at dawn and wearily looking for breakfast and - well - Hair of the Dog.

A: Upfront coffee like roast, followed by molasses – no noticeable oatmeal aroma.
A: Deep black color, opaque, practically no head retention.
F: Slightly sweet, followed by lots of roasted grains. Slight hop bitterness on the finish.
M: Medium-light bodied with light carbonation, and somewhat of a chewy mouthfeel.
O: For being an oatmeal stout I was surprised how thin pirate’s breakfast drinks. The aroma is quite solid, but lacks the silkiness in body and richness in flavor I was expecting.
