In the heroine Atalanta, we see the traits of what we aim for in all of our beers: piquant, deceptively robust, and a bit wild. A tart plum saison, Atalanta tastes of plums intermingling with spicy yeast, and a refreshing tartness that makes Atalanta as good for pairing with food as by itself.

Hops: Hallertau Blanc
Grain: Two row barley, white wheat, flaked wheat
Fermentation: House Lactobacillus Mother, Saison yeast
Other: Plums, cold pressed for us by Arden’s Garden

Straw in color, no head to speak of. Nose is slightly sour as is the taste. Feeling is like weak lemonade that does feel like it is stripping enamel from my teeth. Good stuff.

Looking to a more rustic and wily base flavor, Orpheus chooses the saison for a foundation of flavor that favors the sour and the stone fruit for a beer that's no half-hearted attempt. This beer is plum good.

Pale straw and swirling with a fine yeasty froth, Atalanta builds a bright white froth and a fruity, tart and spicy bouquet that greets the senses with citrus, melon, wine and berry. A gentle but crisp sweetness kicks off the taste with a backbone of wafer, cracker and sourdough with a soft whimsical notion of honeysuckle.

The fruit flavors simply abound as the ale crosses the middle palate. Apple, lemon, pear, lime, white grape and peach all seem to pull from the natural souring agents of the beer while the juiciness of plum additions add cantaloup, blackberry and white wine character. Trending both spicy and tart on the late palate, the beer is a crisp and refreshing session that closes with the character of spicier white wines.

Medium light in body, the beer's acidity keeps the session light while the beer finishes fruity and tart with a brief musty sour aftertaste of sourdough and damp burlap for extra measure. Atalanta leaves impressions of a slightly more earthy, spicy and characterful version of the many fruit kettle sour ales on the market to give it a slight edge.

12 oz. can stamped canned on 3/3/21

Gold color with a light haze. 1 cm. fine white head, spotty lacing. No sediment.

Light funk, plum, grape, lemon scents.

Plum shines through in the tasting. Light pepper, grapefruit, pale malt flavors.

Spiky hop zing, good carbonation, light bodied. Not very sour.
Refreshing with enough depth of flavor to remain the center of attention. Another well crafted Orpheus beer.

A very interesting saison it smells rather sour but the body delivers more bready malts but there is still the slight sourness of the fruit with tart aspects. Taste is pretty medium bodied can't expect a slam it but it does have a nice flavor and deliver on the gimmick aspect. Interesting to say the least.

Look: It pours straw with a white head. Head retention is very good.

Smell: The aromas are a bit light in smell with some plum and mild sourness. There is a bit of spice and earth.

Taste: It is very bready and doughy with some plum in support. There is a bit of spice and some cracker.

Feel: It has a medium light body with high carbonation.

Overall, the strength of the malt surprised me. I will the plum flavors would have been a little more bold.

L:. Pours a brilliant pale yellow gold with a small white head and no lacing.

S:. Notes of tart plum, a touch of salt, some sour and light crackers malt.

T:. Tart plums, a touch of salt, a slight sour but more tart then sour, a light saison yeast, and a light cracker malt. Overly this is a nicely restrained and easy drinking sour.

F:. Light body, some bubbly carbonation.

O:. This is a lighter sour and more tart than sour but I still really enjoyed it, feels like a great summer beer.
