Presentation: 12 ounce standard brown glass bottle with a shoulder embossed with a brace of Sam Adams text. Frosted dark blue, light blue and freezing white colored labeled projects the Winter perfectly. Listed as a Seasonal Brew. The label design on my bottle differs markedly from the older more expressive one in the BA Database. For this Winter Lager has a much simpler appearance, but one that looks more like the other SA generic labels. Described as A Dark Wheat Lager brewed with Winter Spices Has a nicked APR Brewery Fresh date and a listed Strength of 5.8% ABV.
Appearance: Dark coppered body with some darker amber beset in the ruby jeweled clarity. Beige head has tanned inflections and leaves some very accomplished looking lacing on the sides of the glass. Finely dissolved conditioning is high in spirits and reinstates a ½ thick head with a good swirl. Overall looks are impressive.
Nose: Musty caramel with some wheat laden but discernibly toasted malts. Bitterness lingers in and amongst a soft spiced middle. Finish is clean and attractive. Solid aromas but a tad lightweight strength wise at times.
Taste: Entrance has toasted malt, commences with caramel and wheat. Delicate spiced hoppiness wrestles with the malts, but breaks through here and there; just enough to tease, but it makes a clean get away in the dry ending. The entire brew is very clean, there are, essentially, no faults to this beer at all; minor niggles, but certainly no faults.
Mouthfeel: I had to crack my second bottle (from the SA Winter Classic Pack) to finish this review and on reflection it doesnt quite make a 4.0, but it is a very solid 3.5. Could be viewed as light, but the body is clean which coupled with its stripped down persona, and devoid of any excessive detritus, lends a more lightweight aspect.
Drinkability: Judging by the fact that I was on my second bottle by this part of the review, it seems that the issue of Drinkability wouldnt be too hard to address. This is nicely balanced brew, light spices, smooth but beefy Mouthfeel,
Overall: Cant believe that I missed the opportunity to Review this to date as this is one of my favorite Seasonal Brews from Sam Adams. It is always a pleasure to sink a couple more of these once I get cracked into my annual SA Winter Classics Pack. Id have no problems splashing Benjamins on a Six-Pack for this one, at any time of the year. Recommended.
