Fresh out of a 12 pack, Feb 2007.
Crystal clear, amber hued, minimal bubbling and a beautiful head.
Complex malt base on the smell as well as some spicy, flavorful hops. Mild spicing. Charred fruit. Smell is subdued and allows a hint of alcohol to creep through.
Very well balanced -- equal parts malts, hops, spices. Hops are crisp and spicy, malts are sweet and figgy, definitely a base of amber malts that reminds me of some Saranac products. Hops are present in the beginning, middle, and end. Miscellaneous sweet seasonings on the finish and a grains of paradise type taste lingers (and not in a welcome way).
Mouthfeel is medium thickness with heavy carbonation, combined with the hops and spices it packs a tingle on the tongue. Doesn't go down without a fight, but that's a good thing here.
Not so remarkable that I'd make this the focus of a tasting, but easily sessionable, and well balanced for a winter seasonal. I'm always happy to see the blue bottles on the shelves and have many fond memories with this beer.
