12oz bottle from mixed 12 poured into Sam Adams glass

A- Translucent yellowish gold, very slightly hazy, about a quarter of a finger of white frothy head that quickly dissipates.

S- Mainly a citrusy slightly sweet lemon smell with some wheat, a little bit of hops, and some light floral scents mixed in the background.

T- Kind of a lemon flavored water taste, with a some wheat, light hops, a little bit bitter finish. Not too sweet, kind of disappointing after a such a nice lemon smell.

M- Light to medium bodied but more on the light side. Goes down fairly smooth, average carbonation.

O- I've had the Sam's Summer quite a few times and I've never been a huge fan. There are much better summer beers/wheat beers out there. To me it has a pleasant lemony smell, but the taste isn't quite there. It has too much of a watery taste, that doesn't quite taste right. I tried the Dogfish Namaste right before this to compare and it was significantly better. That beer had much more flavor, something Sam's Summer should definitely try to strive for. It's a decent local beer for hot summer days, but there are definitely some better options out there.

A- Looked almost identical to Blue Moon or Shock Top!
Cloudy orange haze. Had about a one finger head that resided to about a pinky's worth. The carbination was present through the the beer's cloudy body. It was screaming up from the bottom of the glass to the top.

S- Primary scent was of citrus fruits, lemon primarily and some orange. Smelled of musty wheat. Again, identical to a Blue Moon or Shock Top.

T- Just like the smell: lemon and orange, with that musty wheat/malt presence. There is a tiny bit of spiciness, but that is the last flavor I noticed. Unlike a Blue Moon or Shock Top, it didn't have an adjunct flavor of corn husks or rice, which is a why the taste gets a 3.0 instead of a 2.5. This is not offensive in any way.

*FYI- This beer is typically served with a orange slice like the Blue Moon and Shock Top, but I didn't have one. The bartender where I was knows me and knows I don't fruit the beer!

M- Light and watery. Water is very clean and crisp tasting. This beer feels very carbonated. The carbination creates a vibrating sensation on the tongue.

If I wasn't from Massachusetts, the desire to try this beer probably wouldn't be as high as if I were from somewhere other than New England. With that being said, this beer is only a notch above Blue Moon and Shock Top. I like how there isn't an adjunct used in the brewing process, but it still just tastes too similar to Blue Moon and Shock Top, and not enough like a craft brewer made it.

poured from the bottle into a weizen glass

A - Pours a slightly hazy golden blonde with a few specs of spice floating around. A few occasional bubbles rise to the dense, 1-finger, white head. Head is reduced to a thin ring of bubbles a third of the way down the glass. Leaves behind no lacing.

S - A fair amount of wheat malt and lemon grass notes.

T - A bit of refreshing lemon notes upfront. The body is a bit of an awkward balance between wheat malt and a tart lemon grass bitterness. A little bit of a flash of lemon as the beer passes over the back of the tongue fades into a wheat malt and slightly spiced (coriander?) finish.

M - Light bodied and highly carbonated. Suits the style well and still has enough substance to not seem like carbonated water.

Samuel Adams Summer Ale is practically ubiquitous in bars and restaurants across the country during the warm months. In typical Samuel Adams fashion, its quality falls about directly in between a high quality micro brew and a macro. I found the lemon grass notes a little off-putting in this beer, but appreciated the attempt at complexity non-the-less. I would drink this if given to me, but would much rather pick up Widmer Hef for a heat-beating American Pale Wheat.

12oz bottle into pint glass

Look is a slightly hazy unfiltered gold with orange tint. Bone white head has good retention and lacing. Smell is stinky grain, some grassy hops, and an odd sweet smell. Taste starts with equal parts grain and lemonade, followed by an odd lingering plastic taste paired with very medicinally bitter hops. Not very enjoyable. Light-medium feel with good carbonation.

Maybe this was just a bad bottle, but this is my least favorite Sam's by far.
