For my 50th BA beer review: a return to an old standby.
I can remember drinking a lot of the Boston Lager when there were few and far between good beers to be found on the shelves. Had some on tap the other night, thought I'd focus a little closer with some bottles.
A -- Wonderful clear golden-amber with a thick, soapy, long-lasting off-white head.
S -- Aroma is pretty thin, had hoped for some more malt -- even some good hop note from Hallertauer. The hops are there, but for a "Vienna," I'd expect more malt.
T -- Very nice malt & hop balance, maybe a shade too hop-heavy to style, but not heavily overdone. Sweet, bready malt start with spicy hop close and dry finish. Some vague butteriness in the aftertaste, but not quite diacetyl -- similar to Pilsner Urquell's aftertaste.
M -- Body is light to light medium with a very good, soft mouth-feel.
D -- Drinkability is average as the hop aftertaste starts to get a little cloying. Noble hops seem to do this when used in greater amount, I get the same effect with Pilsner Urquell. At 4.75%, this is would be a great session beer if you like heavy noble hop character.
