Stirring from the haze of winter, this refreshing unfiltered White Ale awakens its smooth wheat with the bright snap of spring spices. From the subtle sweetness of orange peel and plum to the peppery bite of fresh ground coriander, the blend of spices creates just the right refreshing kick to signal that spring is on its way.

The Cold Snap is very similar to all the other White Ales that Samuel Adams has produced. The beer pours a hazy yellow with sparse white head that is not lacing. The scent carries spice. The taste is a nice blend of spice and hops and there is a nice sweet finish. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall this is a solid beer....but nothing spectacular.

12 oz. bottle poured into a wheat glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange with a one-and-a-half inch white head. Carbonation is heavy, as is lacing. Head sticks around for a good amount of time before receding to a white film.

Aromas: The aromas are mellow, and dominated by orange and spices. It's a nice nose; a bouquet of inviting aromas, mostly citrus. Doesn't hit you hard, but let's you know this will be a nuanced beer.

Taste: This is a super white ale. The flavors are somewhat subtle, but they follow the nose almost exactly. Hop bitterness and alcohol are both very subdued. It's very easy on the palate and finishes subtly. Pretty great.

Mouthfeel: It has a decent amount of body, but it's very sessionable. Not watery and very smooth.

Overall: Sam Adams seems to change its Spring seasonal every year, and I'm glad they made this switch. Would love to see it as an annual, as it would work for all seasons. If you have a friend who swears by Blue Moon, slip them one of these - it's better. Also better than most Spring seasonals globally. Would drink again.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. Best by date of June 2014 notched into the label.

Appearance: Cloudy golden body with a slight orange hue. Respectable foam head collapses to a creamy cap and does not leave much lacing.

Smell: Coriander dominates the nose. Orange juice and a bit of clove hang around as well.

Taste: The spices hit first. Coriander and orange zest are carried on a pretty bubbly body. The malts have a hard time breaking through the carbonation. This ones is sweet and tangy but lacks a strong grainy backbone.

Mouthfeel: As I mentioned this brew is very carbonated. Medium body. Easy to drink.

Overall: My main problem with Cold Snap was the lack of malts. The orange and spice were good but they need malts in order to round this one out. This was refreshing but is not a beer I will run out to buy more of any time soon.

12 oz. bottle, with the label notched at best before May 2014. Yet another seasonal witbier, or white ale, from Samuel Adams. Expectations are mediocre at best, considering the outcome of several others of beers in the style from this brewery.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a finger and a half of frothy white head on top of a bright hazed orange-yellow body. Some okay scattered lacing. Looks alright for what it is.

S - Smell is comprised of the usual suspects - grassy, lemon peel / orange zest, florals, coriander, bubblegum malt, musty yeast presence, sage, white pepper, & other assorted spice rack notes. Not breaking any new ground, but it's okay.

T - Taste follows the nose, but with lots of crisp dry wheaty / graininess up front. Some zesty orange / lemon fruitiness, bubblegum / bread malts, earthy yeast, and floral / herbal spice rack notes - sage, coriander, white pepper.

M - Feel is crisp and clean, with some fruity / yeast stickiness, but it is pretty boring. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Wheaty aftertaste.

Overall, I suppose it's okay, but I have about had it with these seasonal Samuel Adams witbiers that all seem to look, smell, and taste alike. Not harsh, foul, or astringent, but boring, one-dimensional, and uninspired. I wouldn't want it again.
