Currently splitting a 12oz bottle into two pint glasses with a friend. It's not bad at all, aroma is fragrant and fruity. Taste is of hops and bready malt with a slightly spicy, peppery finish. Not a bad addition to the SA line, but I'm also not sure if it's all that different from a few of their other brews. It just didn't hold my attention.

My wife and I once spend a week trying to sample every Kolsch in Cologne, visiting more than a dozen neighborhood brew houses. Best beer adventure of my life (we were there for an academic conference, hope the dean isn't reading this). Anyhow, going in, having read the description of this distinctive local brew, I was less than enthused. At the end of the week, I was a convert. I have been buying domestic Kolsches ever since. This is my favorite so far.

Thanks to my dad for hooking me up with a few different beers from the Sam Adams Winter Favorites Craft Beer Variety Pack.

Slightly hazy, golden amber appearance. After a vigorous pour, the beer was capped by a one-finger tall, creamy and frothy, eggshell colored head that quickly dropped to a thin, bubbly collar. Fairly poor retention. A few spotty droplets of lacing trickled along the glass.

The aroma was akin to an average Euro pale lager. Bready, German-style malts were noticeable. Somewhat grainy. Moderately skunky. With time, the skunky notes subsided and the nose turned much cleaner and crisper. A touch floral and almost a bit soapy. The skunkiness however reappeared later in the session and was quite distracting.

The flavor profile was initially very similar to the nose. Biscuity, pilsner malts came through on the front end. Somewhat musty and skunky. Slightly buttery in the center. The beer finished with even more skunkiness and a crisp, dry, earthy hop presence that lingered long after the swallow. Overall, a bit disappointing. As the beer sat, things changed considerably. Tart, lemony notes came forth. Grassy hops appeared on the back end and in the finish. The skunkiness was still noticeable but it dissipated significantly.

The mouthfeel was definitely the most impressive aspect of this beer. It was rich and frothy and contained a fine, sprightly effervescence. Creamy, smooth and pillowy soft on the palate. Ultra fluffy.

With record breaking snowfall this year and mornings that routinely start below 0, I welcome any beer that reminds me of warmer weather. That said, Cold Snap may not be the most exciting Kölsch on the market, but it is nevertheless a tasty and refreshing change of pace from heavier winter offerings.

Pours a hazy golden straw color with a fluffy white head that has some big bubbles. A bit of lacing on the glass.

The aroma has a very German scent. A dry grainy malt mixes with grassy hops. A bit of sulfur notes from the hops. Some lime as well. Kind of a Euro lager aroma actually.

The flavor is fairly neutral. A bready/doughy flavor from the malt. Some honey sweetness. The hops are grassy and have a hint of lime. Perhaps a touch of pepper. Light sulfur notes.

The beer has a light body with prickly carbonation. Great balance, drinks crisp and clean.

The beer is what it intended to be, an easy drinking crisp brew. Its not terribly exciting and there is a bit too much Euro lager to this one but its a fine beer.
