Picked up the Sam Adams spring sampler pack recently, mainly because it had 2 new beers in it I had never drank before, one of which is this beer. Poured out of a 12 oz. bottle into one of my stange glasses, this beer pours a fairly cloudy/hazy light to medium golden color with lots of little bubbles rising to the beer's surface. The white head is probably about 1/3 of an inch thick when first poured before settling pretty quickly to a medium sized ring lining the inside of the glass with some decent cluster swirls of surface film layer foam. barely any lacing. Aromas of grainy, bready, slightly biscuity malt along with some floral aspects too. Not much else smell wise. Has a slightly sweet, bready, grainy, biscuity caramel malt sweetness upfront that gives way to some fruity citrus notes, notes of honey and wheat, and a very slight touch of hop bitterness. The flavors are very well balanced, and do all come out more as the beer sits and warms up a bit. Not bad. Has a crisp, yet smooth, slightly prickly, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate to heavy carbonation. Finishes clean. An interesting take on this style and certainly different from the other kolsch beer that these guys have done.

Go for Gaffel over this. It's an ok Kolsch. Nothing bad about it but it's not something to seek out.

Who secretly replaced my Sam Adams Limited Release Kolsch with Busch.

I tried nearly every Kölsch in Köln when I was there. (How many are there, 4 or 5?). This does not even come close to a Kölsch.

The point is not that this is an awful beer, it's mediocre at BEST, but moreover it's such a poor outing that I REALLY expect more from a Sam Adams product. It feels like the same weak seasonal brew shilling from lines like Blue Moon, and Shock Top, the micro pretenders.

Seriously, I'll take a Busch over a Bud any day - it's about the only Anh-Busch product I can stomach, but I don't pay $10 a sixpack for Busch (half that if you're lucky) and this beer looses at least half, if not a whole point for being a terrible value.

Is this a sign of we we can start to expect from Sam Adams; pointless and mediocre (if I'm generous) seasonal brews shoveled out there for the sake of competition and market share scrambling?

Pours an opaque but clean golden yellow with head as white and whispy as can be, into stange glass (which I purchased earlier today for the occasion). Smells about like a draft-in-the-can macro lager, but less strong. That would be malt more so than hops, and possibly a trace of adjunct (some Kölsches have a smidgeon of wheat, not sure about the Sam Adams variety). Very well-balanced. I prefer beers that more heavily favor either the hops or the malt or even the alcohol — up to a point. I'm not terribly enthusiastic about middlers. Taste is lager-like. More bitter as it lingers. Moderately clean finish. Pairs well with spaghetti, seasoned, sans sauce.

This has a nice crisp clean taste. Perhaps slightly too carbonated.
