1997 vintage. Poured from an 8.5 oz bottle into a snifter. Cool looking bottle.
Appearance: Pours dark, dark brown, with no head whatsoever. No light coming through, but there are bare hints of reddish/purple around the edge of the glass.
Smell: An incredibly strong mixture of soy sauce and booze, backed by a nutty-chocolate aroma. I think there might be maple syrup in there, but it's hard for me to tell. Smells a bit like stale sherry, if that makes any sense. As the beer warms, more chocolate notes come through. Overall, it's not entirely pleasant...
Taste: Not very much at all like the smell. It is very, very sweet - this beer absolutely must be drank in small sips. The dominant flavor is plums and other dark fruits. The finish is smooth, but there are slight bitter chocolate undertones. The sweetness lingers for quite a long time in the aftertaste. There's somewhat of a cough medicine like taste in it as well. Surprisingly, the alcohol isn't that evident until the finish. It is very interesting, flavor wise. Very complex. Doesn't taste like any other beer I've ever tasted. It does remind me a lot of sherry.
Mouthfeel: Very, very creamy, with no carbonation whatsoever. It's difficult to know how to rate it - but for this kind of drink, I think it works. This beer is more like a sherry or apertif, and carbonation would detract from the flavors.
Drinkability: Well, it's obviously a sipper. I personally wasn't a big fan - because as I've said, it reminds me a lot of sherry, and I'm not a huge sherry fan. The sweetness can become overpowering and cloying fairly quickly. However, that being said, I don't think it's as bad as a lot of the reviews has claimed. It is most certainly different than any other beer - it is best treated as an apertif.

Shared this with BPK59 at his birthday party. A fun tick. This was 1995 vintage. Of course Ben broke the cork off and in to the bottle...hah!
A - Poured in to a small snifter a motor oil thick dark dark brown nearly black hue with some really incredible legs.
S - Aromas of sweeter malts, salty brine, soy sauce.
T - Taste is even worse than the nose. Loads of sticky sweet malts, salty sweet soy sauce. Ugh
M - Mouthfeel is heavy and syrupy
O - Overall this was a soy bomb. I guess this beer truly is russian roulette, as some bottles are incredible and others are just plain drain pour. Still, glad I got to try it!
