The cork came out in one piece--based on many of the reviews I've read on here I'm thinking I might have gotten lucky. Poured very dark, almost jet black. None of the black bile or black chunks I've heard about. No head whatsoever.
I did detect the infamous soy sauce aroma, though not nearly so pronounced as I expected; it was not strong enough to deter me, by any means. I picked up a little maple, and some definite booziness as well.
The taste was surprisingly pleasant, given my expectations...no rotten fetuses, or guilty, putrid loads lost while watching bad horror flicks. The maple is definitely assertive, and there is a strong booze presence. The most interesting aspect of this beer, however, is the complex finish--there's a rush of heat from the alcohol, as well as some nutty, sweet tones, accompanied by a plethora of other shades that my uncultivated palate cannot discern.
The moutheel is nothing special, but not atrocious either, by any means. Flat and inky, but what can one expect from a twelve year old beer...
The drinkability is really where this one suffers. I have to admit, this wasn't the easiest glass of beer to finish, but I've had drain pours, and this wasn't one of them. It's a slow sipper to be sure...but then again, it was meant to be such.
Either I got lucky with the bottle I had, or the extravagantly bad reviews of this beer are hype-fueled. Pretty good job on the part of this brewery, in my opinion--especially considering this is one of the forerunners in the extreme beer style.

Shared this with BPK59 at his birthday party. A fun tick. This was 1995 vintage. Of course Ben broke the cork off and in to the bottle...hah!
A - Poured in to a small snifter a motor oil thick dark dark brown nearly black hue with some really incredible legs.
S - Aromas of sweeter malts, salty brine, soy sauce.
T - Taste is even worse than the nose. Loads of sticky sweet malts, salty sweet soy sauce. Ugh
M - Mouthfeel is heavy and syrupy
O - Overall this was a soy bomb. I guess this beer truly is russian roulette, as some bottles are incredible and others are just plain drain pour. Still, glad I got to try it!
