Bottle year '97.
This is one of those beers that I feel I had to try when/if I ever got a chance despite it possibly being over the hill and beyond it's better days. Suprisingly enough, after 13 years the cork was still full and perfectly in tact. Poured a very dark brown with red and brown highlights around the edges. Absolutely flat and with no head to be found. Beer was very viscus, thick, clinging and coating to the glass and everywhere else it touched... similar to the way a spirit or high alcohol wine coats the interior of a glass when swirled. Aroma had a smell ranging from soy sauce to maple sweetness and even some woodsy characteristics. Taste is very sweet upfront with licorice notes and a bitter wood and oakiness. Piercing amount of alocohol bite with some black coffee blended with chocolate bitterness. Strangely enough, it even tasted a bit like soy sauce. Imagine if you will...a piece of dark chocolate, put into a smoker and then marinated in whiskey and soy sauce before being melted, blended and served. Very thick and coating mouthfeel like alcohol was used to thin out a syrup. Once at room temperature it tasted and smelled somewhat reminiscent of prunes. A word of caution: stand clear of the scummy black swamp water at the bottom of the bottle. Sediment was 1/4 of an inch thick like tar, corroded shingles/coffee grounds. When rinsing what I thought was a black bottle, what appeared to be decomposing pieces of leaves fell off the interior sides of the glass and behold the bottle is actually a brilliant blue.
I found this beer to be quite interesting overall and taken for what it is worth, I would have it again. Maybe I am one of the fortunate ones that had a bottle that was properly taken care of and the next try might be horrible...who knows.

Shared this with BPK59 at his birthday party. A fun tick. This was 1995 vintage. Of course Ben broke the cork off and in to the bottle...hah!
A - Poured in to a small snifter a motor oil thick dark dark brown nearly black hue with some really incredible legs.
S - Aromas of sweeter malts, salty brine, soy sauce.
T - Taste is even worse than the nose. Loads of sticky sweet malts, salty sweet soy sauce. Ugh
M - Mouthfeel is heavy and syrupy
O - Overall this was a soy bomb. I guess this beer truly is russian roulette, as some bottles are incredible and others are just plain drain pour. Still, glad I got to try it!
