A: Pours a clear orange color. The head is fairly tall, with a faint orange tint and a fairly frothy texture. Retention is average, and some patches of splotchy lace stick to the glass.

S: Some caramel malt aroma up front. Moderate hop notes. Mild citric and fruity hoppiness. A bit grassy and herbal as well. Muted for an IPA, but pleasant enough.

T: Fairly malty up front, with equal parts pale and caramel flavor. Mild hop bitterness adds balance. There are fruity, tropical notes here, as expected. Some grassy/herbal flavor accompanies. Some underlying sweetness creeps back towards the finish.

M: Medium-firm mouthfeel. Carbonation is smooth, and slightly lighter than average. A somewhat dry finish is mitigated by some persistent body.

O: This is a fine beer. A little safe for my tastes, but it's approachable and easy drinking. Pineapple and tropical flavors should complement American hops nicely, so this is a recipe that makes sense.

Copper in color with excellent clarity. A fingernail thick layer of off white head is disappearing before my eyes. It does not cover all of the top of the beer. There is light Brussels lacing. Aroma is faint pineapple and light malt. I get light malt and then muted pineapple flavor. The majority of the piney hop flavor comes through in the aftertaste. The mouth is moderately carbonated.

Another Sam Adams Long Shot home brewer competition beer, Pineapple IPA why not? I like IPA and I love the local Rivertowne Pineapple beer. Appears copper with some chill haze on my glass white head fine speckled lacing left behind. Aromatics offer up some pineapple flesh and hop additions, can't say I'm picking up on any specific hop varieties. Generic hop flavor, tart juicy pineapple juice added pretty lackluster base IPA which weakens the overall experience, I'm getting muddled hop leaf notes...mild citrus and that's about it. I can't even pick out the pineapple completely, if it was a blind tasting I highly doubt I could figure out the fruity character I'm getting. Mouthfeel, is solid thru and thru not cloying a bit sweet for an IPA I would enjoy a bit of a drier finish, carbonation weighs heavy and each sip gets a bit more hard to endure. Medium to light bodied overall, on the feel and texture slightly slick hop oils but not as dank and resinous as my favorite IPA offerings. Overall, Sam Adams struggles with IPAs, this version is no different and I can't promise you that the pineapple did anything to make this a better beer.

poured into a pint glass

A- pours a clear golden color with a small white foamy head that reduces to a small cap, leaving no lace behind

S- subtle citrusy hop aroma with some spicy character, sugary sweet malt & pineapple juice

T- trying to find any hop bitterness up front is a chore, it's more sweet and malty than anything. As is nears the finish it tastes like a mixture of grapefruit juice and pineapple juice, with a slight citrusy hop bitterness on a sweet and sugary finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy and crisp mouthfeel with a sweet and bubbly finish

O- It's hard to call this an IPA because the hops just simply aren't there. It is however very drinkable and is a decent option for a summer day

Poured into a Willibecher glass, this beer has extremely bright clarity and a deep saturated orange tone. Rapid rising carbonation and patchy coverage on the surface for the duration of the glass. Some residual lacing halfway through and a couple fingers of foam initially.

Aroma is a bit muted, even as it warms. Honestly it smells more like a euro lager to me than anything. Faintly sweet caramel malt, ample yeast. Where are the hops or pineapple?

Taste is similar, it's almost too clean to be an IPA, it comes off more like a lager hybrid. Malty with an indistinct fruit flavor, residual hoppy bitterness though it's fairly mild for an IPA. Any pineapple seems to be lost in the mix. Light feel, again more lager like, crisp with a drying finish. Overall this was just average, I hope the other Longshots are better this year.
