It may be a Longshot, but I'll give it a shot as I continue to winnow through the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle: "This traditional smoked wheat beer's unique flavor comes from a combination of the smoky sweetness from the heirloom smoked malt and the spicy and herbal notes from Saaz hops."; "Created by: Cesar Marron".

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Marron for not getting to his beer until now, but no time like the present! First, a Pop! of the cap, followed by a gentle pour. Whoops! A moment of inattention as the bottle slipped into the glass & I had a brief finger of foamy, bone-white head that quickly faded to wisps. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5), but since the Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon prefers 24-karat clarity, I was left on my own. Goody! More for me, since I looove Smoked Beers! The nose was REALLY smoky on this one! It was enough to cause the smoke alarm to go off in my kitchen once I had enough poured into the glass to allow its smell to waft into the sensors. Mouthfeel was medium. I'm glad that I drank Bonfire Blonde just before this one. Where B.B. was really intense, this was more subtle in terms of its inherent smokiness. I have done smoked tastings before and people that normally crinkle their noses at the thought actually like this level of smoke. For me, it was a little on the light side, but unlike B.B., this one was more sweet than tangy, more towards Korean BBQ beef. Jesus H. Kee-rist! I am becoming ravenously hungry in thinking about all of this. I generally liked smoked foods with smoked beers & here, I might have gone with smoked oysters or smoked mussels for a saltiness to offset the sweetness in this beer. Finish had a light, sweet smokiness that lingered well past the swallow. My sinus cavity seemed to be filled with the scent of smoke, so it is clearly time for a break & some lunch before my next review. Grazie, Cesar!

12oz bottle, poured into a pint

A- pours a hazy pale yellow with some golden hue, paper thin foamy white head retains decently after the pour, leaving no lace behind

S- smoky peat, campfire, crisp wheat, woodsy/earthy, slightly spicy hop

T- subtle, but smoky malt flavor gives notes of smoked pork, campfire smoke, charcoal & smoked peat. Saaz hops gives a slight spicy character that continues into a dry smoky finish

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp dry finish

O- a good mix of drinkability and smoke that doesn't overpower

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 8/2014. Pours hazy golden straw color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, wood smoke, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/smoke earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with well balanced pale malt, smoke, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, wood smoke, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/smoke earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, wood smoke, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/smoke earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and balance of pale malt, smoke, and earthy hop flavors; with good robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth crisp, and slightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.4%. Overall this is a nice and pleasant gratzer style ale. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of pale malt, smoke, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle BB Aug 2014 at 35 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma – citrusy
Head large (5 cm), white, frothy, diminishing to 3 mm layer
Lacing good – complete rings of tiny to medium bubbles
Body light yellow, chill haze
Flavor lightly smoked malt, crisp ending; no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate light, watery, carbonation lively

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 4, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.625. Final weighted score: 3.75
A very pleasing entry from SA Longshot series. This resembles a gose but is slightly smokier. The smoke produces an illusion of salt at the end, or maybe it’s the hops, but whichever, it’s darn good. If SA produced this regularly, I’d buy it.
