Tried a bottle last night for New Years. Poured into a brandy snifter glass. Freshness date says fresh until April 2009.
This brew was about what I expected, and I mean that in a good way. Sweet roasted malty flavors up front, followed by a very complex chocolate mix of dark chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla, and touch of cocoa. Nice bite from the noble hops which do an excellent job of keeping this brew in balance, as I never found it getting too sweet as I sipped it. Medium bodied, but actually about right, as too much thickness would likely make this brew a bit overwhelming considering the strong chocolate flavors.
Overall, a very good, once in a great while beer, which is just what it is meant to be since the BBC classifies this is an "extreme beer." Kudos to them, as this beer isn't too intimidating, but at the same time the aging over the Swiss Chocolate produces some very complex flavors that create a quite interesting blend in this bock. Almost like taking a sip of a good bock and then a nice bite of chocolate. An excellent beer to pair with a chocolate dessert, especially one as good as my wife makes!
