Appearance: Dark brown-ruby-garnet, almost cola-like body. Foamy tan head disperses quickly to a thin rim-collar leaving creamy streaks of lace.
Smell: Sweet, toasty, biscuity malt. A stout-like earthiness and gigantic sweet-milky hot cocoa / bitter cocoa powder nose.
Taste: Lush, creamy sweet malt and milk chocolate to start. Toasted grain with burnt grain/bitter cocoa notes at the top. Finishes quite dry with bitter hops and cocoa powder in the aftertaste. Note: I found both the nose and taste to be highly temperature sensitive...hang in there and let this warm to the glass.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, silky. Nicely bubbled. Dries nicely in the finish in spite of all of the semingly sweet elements.
Drinkability: Has both bock and stout characteristics. But chocolate is the overwhelming theme. Didn't quite live up to my expectations and is definitely overpriced... but you really need to try this... split a bottle with friends and see what you think.
