12 oz. bottle from Winter Variety pack, freshness date of Mar. 2011. Poured into a mug. Review taken from notes.
Appearance: Poured a dark, Coca-Cola type of brown and left a bubbly 2-finger tan head which slowly faded to a head of a few millimeters and left some solid but not totally impressive lacing down the side of the mug. Hints of crimson and ruby when held to the light.
Smell: Underwhelming for a beer which is so hyped. There are the obligatory caramel malts of Sam Adams' other seasonals, but there are also strong hints of milk chocolate and some vanilla on the tail end. Aromatic but one-dimensional.
Taste: Unlike other Sam Adams winter beers, the caramel malts aren't the first thing to hit the tongue. No, like the name suggests, this is all about the chocolate. At first the cocoa accents take over; there's a slightly sweet malt middle, and there are hints of more roasted malts and coffee toward the end along with a very strong taste of milk chocolate. While it's definitely sweet and pleasing, there's not much complexity here. The chocolate taste is actually fairly elegant and doesn't seem forced or artificial, which I found to be a relief. No hop presence to be found here at all, which was a shame for me; the sweetness really needed some balance. Maybe some hints of dark chocolate would have helped this.
Mouthfeel: Super smooth and velvety. This almost slides down your throat. Best thing about this beer, in my opinion.
Drinkability: Although it's pretty good, there's no way I would buy this in six packs. It's a novelty beer, let's face it. Good for dessert, but way too sweet and unbalanced to drink on a regular basis.
Not a bad beer by any means, but I think this brew was the middle of the road for the Winter Variety pack despite its reputation. I'll take the Holiday Porter over this any day.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.
A - Pours a deep brown, almost black color with a moderate head but lacing throughout.
S - A mild cocoa with some hint of malt - no hops at all.
T - Chocolate with a hint of sweetness from the malt.
M - Almost velvety smooth with a sweet finish.
O - This is "Yoo Hoo" for adults. Nothing you want to do a session with, but like a lot of Samuel Adams Specialty beers a nice change of pace.
