Given my fondness for chocolate beers and the fact that this bock took home a bronze medal from the GABF this year, I was excited to finally get my hands on a bottle. Dark malts give it a nearly opaque black color, and a slow, smooth pour left a thin, bone white ring of head that clung tenaciously to the walls of my glass. The sweet aroma was fairly subtle, and improved as the lager warmed to room temperature. I picked up notes of raisin and cinnamon as well as the expected milk chocolate.
As for taste, Sam Adams rewards drinkers with a sultry, medium-bodied beer that remains true to style while adding a hefty dose of cocoa flavor. The mouthfeel was rounded and quite silky, further enhancing an already laudable product. Noble hops can be detected in the finish, which offers a slight bitter edge to a malty profile. Definitely a beer for chocolate-lovers to seek out.
