Poured this into a Sam Adams pint
It poured a very dark brown with little head formation that quickly settled to a very thin lacing, which disappeared half way through.
The smell seemed promising. It had a mellow malty aroma. Sort of coffee mocha-ish.
The taste was surprising. I would not have guessed this was a bock. It tasted more like a mild mannered porter to me. So I'm not sure how I should exactly rate this beer.
If this were a porter I would have thought it was decent, borderline good. It had a roasted malt flavor. Not too much hops other than a slight bitterness. The chocolate flavor for me came more towards the end of each drink.
As a bock, I would say this tasted too malty. It had more qualities of a porter than a bock.
M/F: very thin and smooth. The bottle didn't lie, it had a velvet feel.
D: very easy. I could down one of these in a second if I had to. Maybe it's too easy?
Conclusion: I would not have guessed this was a bock. With the category aside, this was good tasting beer. Very smooth with a good mocha flavor. I wouldn't having another.
Note: I gave it a 3 on taste because I didn't think this was indicative of a bock. As a porter it would be about a 4.
