This is the third time I've had Chocolate bock. The first time was in the original 22oz bottles, which tasted different than the second two times. The second was from the holiday 12 pack, and the third, which I am reviewing, was on tap at Doyles not too far from the brewery. The glass was Sam Adams unique glass.
Appearance: Black with little head, no lacing
Smell: Chocolatey and malty
Taste: Like the smell, but with a more pronounced chocolate flavor. Almost like eating chocolate with the beer, but without actually eating chocolate
Mouthfeel: Somewhat heavy, with lower carbonation, but appropriate for the style
Drinkability: Easy to drink one, hard to drink more than one.
Overall, I enjoyed it, and will gladly get more when it is in season again, but next time I will try to age one of the bottles. My original bottle that tasted different (personally I thought it was better) was about one and a half years past the printed expiration date, and had a much more refined taste. Like the chocolate flavor mellowed out and belonged, rather than being an addition.
Serving type: on-tap
