Another one from the "Winter Classics" 12-pack, Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock has a black to smoky-brown body with a massive mocha-colored malty head which slowly recedes to a small, thin foam head across the surface.
THE SMELL is the low point for this otherwise interesting beer. It is mostly sour and vegetal: slightly hoppy + tiny bit sweet. It is not chocolatey and is quite odd.
THE TASTE is exactly as described on the label around the neck. "Chocolate Bock", however seems a bit misleading as there is not much warmth to this beer. The flavors are strongly cocoa powder + tobacco. There is a slight lagery tartness as well. Overall it is sweet and has a wet finish. Tastes very similar to a black lager. I think "Cocoa Lager" would be a better name for this brew cuz it almost tastes like Boston Beer Company took one of their lighter beers and just dumped a couple spoon fulls of Nestle Quik into it!
THE FEEL is of a light porter or winter warmer. It's nice and appropriate for this style.
CONCLUSION: I pity the other reviewers who paid upwards of $16 for this beer! I got two 12oz bottles in a 12-pack that cost less than that! Chocolate Bock is a mellow, very drinkable beer--if you like cocoa, of course--but it's definitely not worth the premium price that, say, Young's Double Chocolate Stout could fetch. Either way, if you can find this beer, give it a try!
