I think Sam released this early Winter variety pack especially for me, to make up for what must have been the coldest San Diego summer of all time. I haven't been this excited to try a Sam Adams beer in... ever. In ever, Chuck.
Wow! I must say I am delightfully surprised! Pours a hearty jet black with considerable tan head that rings the glass nicely. Almost explicitly roasted malts on the nose, rather like the Boston Lager. The taste is another matter altogether...
I think Samuel Adams has really nailed it with this beer. All the luscious balance of their lager meets one of the greatest chocolate infusions I have tasted in a winter ale. Tastes like cocoa boiled on a hearth, with notes of firewood, oak, vanilla, cream and coffee.
I was not expecting to like this beer. Generally a "chocolate" beer at such low alcohol is thin, bland, and boring. Chocolate Bock is anything but. I think Sam Adams has perfected or even invented a style here that I happy to be a part of. Go team!
