12oz bottle (best by March 2011) poured into a shaker pint glass.
Appearance: Very dark beer - black on the table but very dark ruby red when held up to the light. Dense, but thin, tan head across the top of the beer. Some lacing here and there, but it tended to slide back down the glass rather than stick around.
Smell: A rich chocolate liquor smell. Not bittersweet chocolate though - definitely more cocoa like with some raisin-like notes. Very tasty.
Taste: Definitely a fine marriage between roasted malts and a strong cocoa/chocolate flavor. The Mrs. described it as an "alcoholic Hershey's bar" and I don't think she's too far off the mark. Cocoa up front mixing with roasted malts and then a very mild bitter finish that is masked by more cocoa. The chocolate is the dominant flavor here, but it's not overpowering.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation with a mild creamy mouthfeel. Nice.
Drinkability: This is a dessert beer - hands down. It goes at the end of the meal, maybe as the dessert itself. I think you could pair it nicely with a cheeseburger as a beer version of a chocolate milkshake, but otherwise I think it's best to have by itself at the end of a meal. I could not just go straight for this when I want a beer. A good special occasion beer.
