12oz bottle into a snifter. Purchased @ Mustard Seed as a single.
Cut to the chase - this is just a lame beer. It's non-offensive and better than much of the Sam fair that's out there, but there's nothing that screams chocolate bock to me. I can't believe how much these were going for in the 750ml bottles.
As for the play-by-play, the beer is dark brown
with just a little lighter shade coming through around the edges. A film of head leaves just a small ring and no real lace. Average looking beer.
The beer smells like dark fruit and chocolate. Namely, I get notes of cocoa powder and cherry and plum. The malt provides some touches of caramel and even just a hint of nuts. This could be more aromatic, but, again, it's not offensive.
The taste is mainly prunes and chocolate. Not the best combination. This is sweet with a bitter kick towards the end. Not a lot of the bock qualities I look for here. Some semi-sweet chocolate powder lingers, but this gets very boring after a while. 6oz is enough for me.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation, not syrupy at all. The mouthfeel and drinkability are the best parts of the beer, but even those notable aspects can't save this one from an average score.
