Long quick review. This brew never seems to get enough love in my opinion. Every aspect about it is subtle & nuanced, it pours beautiful - near-opaque with a light-caramelly head that lingers briefly. The nose is chocolate & dense maltiness with a hint of hop & booze (you really have to search for that booze). Altogether this beer smells so enticing to me. The flavors are dense but mild. Well-defined chocolate plays overtop a crisp hop hit that floats above the deeper malt notes. There is a trace of smokiness. This brew has a light, undercarbonated feel & I love it! I always look for this beer when it's around.

One of my favorite winter seasonal beers. Missed out on it this year and am still a little depressed about it. Smooth with prominent chocolate malt flavor. Love this brew!

For anyone who likes a smooth creamy sweet beer from time to time this is a must try. It was like a chocolate beer milk shake.

I had it as 12oz bottle and gotta say it was one my favorite chocolate beers ever. I just wish it was more available.

A: Pours a fantastic black color with one finger of caramel colored head that hangs around for a while.

S: A little weak, a mix of chocolate and faint malt aromas.

T: Chocolate and more chocolate. There is a hint of malt in there, but everything is pretty subtle. This is basically a candy bar in a bottle.

F: Thick and creamy, as it should be.

O: If you like chocolate your going to love this one, and it is a fantastic dessert beer. If it were available in six packs, I would probably have it around a lot.

Pours a dark brown almost black color with a nice 1 inch tan colored head that takes a little while to dissipate leaving good lacing down the goblet glass.

Smell is a little weak but I can make out some chocolate malts and the lager yeast smell.

Taste is really good. Those chocolate malts really come through as the dominant taste in this one. Once the chocolate subsides a bit, there is an onrush of sweetness that reminds me of chocolate milk. Chocolate is the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is a bit on the fuller side as you would expect with velvety texture.

Overall, a really good beer. I couldn't drink 20 of them in one sitting but definitely a nice beer to wind down with in the evening during the holidays.

A lighter stout, almost a borderline ale taste. It's on the sweeter side of sweet-bitter notes.

It's just ok. It isn't a whole lot of chocolate and doesn't taste as complex as this beer should.

Appearance: deep brown, almost black color

Overall: Has a chocolate and coffee taste. Very malty. Sweet finish/aftertaste. Okay for a change of pace beer.

Pours a black reddish colour with zero clarity..mocha head that quickly dissipates.

Smells of roasted malt flavours chocolate....some hops...coffee...

Very pronounced coffee and chocolate flavours. Almost chocolate milk flavor. Very tiny hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is a little thicker. Almost like a syrup. Seemed perfect for the beer.

Overall this was quite good. Im not sure i could have tons at a time...i feel that it would get too cloying. I would buy again for sure.

Appearance: pours a 2" thick cream colored head that fades at a moderate pace. Color is a dark reddish-brown through which very little light can penetrate. Lacing is light.
Aroma: fairly mild, I do detect some mild milk chocolate, a hint of hops, and some roasted malts. Mouthfeel: mouthfeel is between light and medium with a decent amount of carbonation. Finish is not very dry.
Flavor: there is no doubt about the chocolate presence in this beer. It is almost a little overwhelming to my tastebuds. I love to eat chocolate but drinking it in a beer I find myself enjoying only in rare cases. Other than the chocolate, there is some hop bitterness, but not much, in the finish and some roasted malt flavor in the middle of the taste.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a deep brown, almost black color with a moderate head but lacing throughout.

S - A mild cocoa with some hint of malt - no hops at all.

T - Chocolate with a hint of sweetness from the malt.

M - Almost velvety smooth with a sweet finish.

O - This is "Yoo Hoo" for adults. Nothing you want to do a session with, but like a lot of Samuel Adams Specialty beers a nice change of pace.

A: Pours a dark chocolate brown, pretty much black, with a creamy mocha ring of head.

S: Malty and chocolatey nose, not much else.

T: Malt, milk chocolate, medium roast coffee and roasted malt.

M: Medium bodied and smooth enough.

O: Not really what I expected, but then again, it doesn't stray too far from what I expected. It's decent, worth a try. Recommended.

Appearance: Deep, dark brown. Tiny lace remains.
Smell: Roasted chocolate and malt.
Taste: Roasted chocolate and malt.

I love this drink. It will be missed. Thankfully I saved one last bottle (I was going to compare the 2012 and 2013, but oh well). The aging didn't negatively affect the taste at all, and it was just as delicious as I remembered. The malt is big, and the roasted smell and taste was delightful. It is nicely smooth and creamy. If offered, I'll get it again.

Poured from a bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Dark Brown color, with a thin, light brown head. The head did not last long.

Smell: Nice mix of aromas. Can detect both from the chocolate and roasted malts, which makes for a nice sweet aroma.

Taste: Nice combination of chocolate and malt flavors. The mouthfeel is smooth, but a little thin. A sweet drink due to the combination of the malts and chocolate makes this an enjoyable beer to drink, but not very complex. A very nice long aftertaste that continues to please.

This is a nice Chocolate Bock from Sam Adams. Although I would like the taste to have a little more hops to balance the sweetness of the chocolate, this is a beer I would enjoy drinking all year round.

A - Solid, opaque black with a light tan head, quick to fade, with some lacing.

S - Definite chocolate nose, cocoa and sweet malty highlights. Suggests malted milk balls.

T - Following the nose, the front is malted milk ball as beer. The close is a bit drier, but still quite sweet.

M - Brisk. A bit heavy on the tongue, slightly slick, but still quite light.

O - A beer that actually delivers chocolate-oriented flavors without coffee or char that so frequently comes in chocolate stouts and porters. I love those, and in part this illustrates why - the bitter bite that close most stouts or porters is needed here in order to avoid fatigue.

One of my favorites. I realize this beer has been replaced with the Cherry Chocolate Bock, which I have yet to try. As far as the now unavailable Chocolate Bock, it will be missed. I had it both in bottles and on tap and the chocolate flavor was right on par. Not too overpowering, not bitter at all, just right. I looked forward to this beer every year and was disappointed to see it go, however, I will withhold judgement until I try the new variation. To be continued, I suppose...

Excellent beer everytthing i described in the Cherry Chocolate Bock this beer deserves a 4.9 rating but i cant rate beer at 4.9 with my options on the menu but not a bad beer one of my favs especially when i could get it but now its replaced by the even better cherry chocolate bock. there is a reason why i save the chocolate beer to the end

A: Dark brown with a creamy, velvety cream-colored head--decent retention; decent lacing

S: Grainy and pretty subdued; some subtle chocolate syrup aromas but pretty simple with not a whole bunch going on beyond wet grains

T: A lot more chocolate in the flavors but more like hershey's chocolate syrup than anything; I wish the malts were richer to play off the chocolate; instead it's just a lot of chocolate syrup that almost becomes cloying

F; Medium body with some creaminess

O: It's not an awful beer but it just doesn't have a ton going on and as I said, the sweet chocolate flavoring does become just too much
