Pours with a decent head but only with average retention, dark brown in color.
Smell has lots of maltiness with some definite chocolate/toffee notes.
Taste: definitely some milk chocolate. Neither bitter or too sweet or bitter upfront, but does have some mild bitterness at the finish.
From my standpoint plenty of chocolate but not overdone. For its style (which I am not familiar with)it meets its label discription.

A: two finger head on a dark brown black body. Nice lacing.

S: dark fruit, caramel, milk chocolate.

T: sour dark fruits and yeast up front with toffee notes transitioning to a milk chocolate, mollasses and brown sugar with a late tapering finish.

M: smooth, medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: not bad. The chocolate is nice but a little weak. This is an old bottle but I imagine it would hold up through the years.

from the 2011 winter mixer.
12oz bottle served in a pint glass.

pours a deep amber / mahogany tone while yielding a tan finger of frothy head; middling retention, not much lacing to speak of. chocolate obviously stars in the aroma, accompanied by some lesser, supporting notes of coffee and roastiness. maybe a hint of hops in the background.

flavor mostly follows the nose. opens sweet, good amount of chocolate, which leads to a finish that is more on the bitter side. medium-light bodied with average carbonation.

doesn't move the earth but it's a tasty and drinkable brew. that seems to be my conclusion with most sam adams beers. they rarely blow you away but tend do a nice job, and i must admit i'm really enjoying this year's winter seasonal pack.

On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a khaki head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, chocolate syrup, and milk chocolate aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty bitterness with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a thick and creamy mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good bock with a nice chocolate presence in the aroma and flavor.
