Pours cloudy golden orange/brown with a 1 and 1/2 finger head. Pretty weak head for a hefe. Is this really a hefe? I see that it's listed as an American Pale Wheat Ale, but it says Hefewiesen right on the label...what gives?
Smells like a very malty ale with a zingy hop back. The only real hint of hefe yeastyness are the faint wafts of bakery aromas. It realy smells pretty good, but it just doesn't seem to nail all of the typical scents for the style. There is no trace of spice for example. The nose is sweet and somewhat bready with a hint of bubble gum. I'm beggining to see why this is not listed as a real hefe on BA. It's seems ya'll know your beers better than Sammy does.
Tastes more fitting to the style than it smells, but IMO this seems almost like a brown ale and not a hefe. Rich and sweet and somewhat doughey. Slightly dry finish with a hint of hop bite at the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel is medium to thick, and the level of carbonation is nice.
This is pretty dang drinkable, if not totally accurate to the style (hefe, not American wheat). It's a bit thick in body for me though, and that detracts from the sessionability IMO.
