12 oz bottle notched April. Stored in the fridge, but warmed for 30 minutes before pouring.
Color is jet black. Only when held to the brightest light does it reveal ruby tints around the edges. Head is clumpy and tan with many large bubbles. A vigorous pour only produced about a finger of head which dissipated fairly rapidly. A fairly thick layer remained, however, and lacing is very nice.
Smells like a 70% cocao chocolate bar. The slightest touch of coffee aroma and alcohol linger around the edges. No hop aroma to speak of.
The flavor begins with a pronounced hop bitterness that fades into a strong chocolate flavor. The lactose comes through, but only slightly. As the beer warmed the burnt flavors of the roasted barley came through a little clearer. Very flavorful and complex.
Creamy describes the feel of this beer perfectly. It slides over the tongue nicely without being oily or sticky. Similar to drinking a glass of milk. Nice body. Carbonation is a little strong, perhaps.
This is not the kind of beer I would want to drink all night long. The flavors are very forward and complex. My palate would call for relief after a few. However, it is perfect for the style and definitely something I will buy again.
