A rather impressive beer from Sam Adams. I'm blowing through the winter 12-pack from Sam's right now and this is one of the two best in the box, the other variety being the Honey Porter.
A: Extremely dark but still transparent, not cloudy. Huge, foamy, sticky head with some lacing.
S: A "Winter Warmer" at its most, this has a nose full of dark malts and spices.
T: On the sweet side, this one will warm you up in no time with its excellent blend of spices for a complex and pleasing flavor that is actually moderately strong. There's also a moderate level of bitterness to balance. This is a perfect after-dinner choice.
M: Really easy on the palate, but not easy enough to keep around for long.
D: This really isn't a session beer, it's more of a once-and-done.
Really, I just don't understand how Sam Adams can pair this and the Honey Porter against the lowly Coastal Wheat and Cranberry Lambic. These make the 12-pack worth it, in my opinion.
