First Old Fezziwig i've had, though i bought the winter sampler pack primarily for it (though you can't go wrong with the winter and boston lagers--the cran lambic is another story)
Pours chestnut brown with a dense head that leaves nice lacing. Smells of dark fruits, caramel and a little nutty, but there's a medicinal thing going on that i'm not liking too much. Starts off with dark fruits and green walnuts (medicinal quality again) with caramel supporting and emerging. Some slightly chocolate malt becomes evident midway through and then lingers through the finish. Spicy throughout, the ginger edge is certainly noticeable, and a faint orange through the finish, the cinnamon i'm not getting so much. With hops playing a supporting role, slightly grassy. Mouthfeel is medium, with medium carbonation creating a creamy texture. Altogether a complex brew, but it doesn't all come together for me. All the flavors are there, but it just doesn't strike me as particularly tasty.
It was worth a shot.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a dark red amber with a fine half finger tan head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of sweet bready and caramel malt, cinnamon, allspice, gingerbread. Flavor follows aroma, with rich caramel malt, holiday spicing leaning towards gingerbread, light chocolate, finishes with cinnamon and light hop spicy bitterness. Really quite nice creamy medium bodied adds to the holiday festiveness. A very nicely made winter beer with holiday spicing that is well done and supported by the malt, which is selected well to support and allow light spices to be the centerpiece. Uncommon in my area, or I would add this to my winter holiday rotation.
