poured from a 12 oz into my arrogant bastard pint glass, a yellow sandy colored head tops the brew dissipating quickly to a residual thin film with thick lacing left on the glass. The body is dark with just hints of dark ember reddish coloration sneaking in at the edges.
The smell strikes me mainly with sweet malty molasses and holiday type spices; cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg come to mind. Small amount of hops freshen the brew a tad making it just floral enough to have a refreshing scent.
The flavor was intriguing, in boldness it definitely did not follow from the smell. The malt is much thinner here which leaves my palate wanting more saturation of that sweeter winter dessert type flavoring. The hops stayed very background which was not in themselves disappointing but with the disappearance of the malt left me wanting. The spices stuck around which kept me happy though, a tad of bite and a tad of sweet from those to balance.
The mouthfeel was on the thin side for a porter, not harsh or anything but also definitely not a creamy feeling that I have come to love. All in all not a bad brew but not my favorite from Sam Adams, I think I liked the Old Fezziwig much better as a holiday type ale.
