Pours a very dark brown with a slight off-white head. The beer looks very much like a porter or stout.
The aroma is sweet, heavily malted, with a hint of hops.
The taste is as sweet as the aroma, with nice carbonation. There are noted of roasted malt, chocolate and caramel. There is a slight hoppy finish but make no mistake, this is a malty beer.
The beer is a little weak, although there is a slight creaminess I would normally associate with stouts.
I find the Sam Adams black lager to be very drinkable. It's not the tastiest beer in the world but it is a nice beer at the low ABV end (below 5%).
