Resurrected as part of the Samuel Adams Brewmaster's Collection, this is a nice twist on the somewhat elusive Porter style, and it employs Scottish heather honey for a unique flavor profile. Let's explore.

Rich, dark brown with faint, shimmering ruby hues around the edges. A fluffy, creamy, sticky, tan head laces the top. Clean, malted aroma, with soft floral notes, raw honey, a touch of roastiness, and molasses in the background. Smooth-ish mouth- feel upfront, broken by a lively carbonation. Citric hops smack within, with some near-lime and rind characteristics. Malty base is not overly sweet. Robust and moderately roasted with a semi-acrid, mild, coffee-bean finish. Honey notes are woven throughout the entire experience, dominating at times, but not overpow- ering. Some dry, dark chocolate and molasses lurk in the complexities. Bone-dry, leafy, powdery finish.

Nice to have this one back. For paring, chocolates would be easy, so we recom- mend taking a risk and enjoying this one with some Mexican food. We think you'll find the match to be perfect, especially with spicier dishes or mole sauces.

Sample from the "Beer Lover's Choice" vote. 12oz brown bottle with a freshness date on the label.

A- Dark brown with ruby highlights, great head retention as the lace leave a spiderweb-like trail down the glass.

S- Slight roasted malt, raw honey comb. Caramelized / burnt sugar.

T&M- Raw honey all throughout ... almost too much of a honey character. Full bodied and very smooth, lush mouth feel. Mild roasted malt flavor and mild on the hops, barely enough bitterness to balance. Finishes very sweet.

D- Not bad but not the Honey Porter I remember ... I am sure my tastes have changed but this one comes off a bit too sweet.

Presentation: 12oz bown bottle, notch denotes best before Jun 2000.

Appearance: Deep, rich dark brown in colour with a patchy foam tan head with nice stick and retention.

Smell: Soft smoke, roasted, caramel, chocolate, faint alcohol, raw honey and grain aromas.

Taste: Extremely smooth, even and medium-bodied. Nice malty depth and body with a semi-astringent roasted character, smoke, raisin, chocolate and buttery caramel flavours that join a quick hoppy bite with hop leaf feel. There's a thin layer of honey flavour, especially in the back of the palate, that creates a tasty lace of mild sweetness. The raisin and caramel flow into the finish, along with some lingering smoke. There is a wee bit of oxidation, but it's expected at this point and is hardly perceived.

Notes: Sadly this beer was discontinued by Sam Adams years ago. But, umm, okay, so this beer is 2 years old? It's true, I've been sitting on it for a while now, and to my surprise it has held up amazingly well! I kept it at a consistent 45F in my 2nd fridge, and prayed to Ninkasi every day -- must have worked.

SA Honey Porter was one of those Porters that got me into Porters. It was just solid, and very enjoyable. I truly miss this beer, and thought it to be one of Boston Beer Co.'s finest products ... to be able to sample this after it's death is a grand thing. I think I need some "Todd" time for a bit ...
