Brewed with authentic ingredients from the colonial era, such as fresh ginger puree, lemon peel and wildflower honey.

Hazy gold with suspended yeast chunklets. Big, puffy, craggy white head forms on the pour, settling into an even, creamy topping. Good lacing and head retention. Far better than average, actually. The yeast chunklets turn me off, but the presentation is great aside from that. Pronounced gingery aroma. Pale malt, doughy yeast, with a bit of "Bit O' Honey", I guess. The ginger really dominates, preventing much else from showing through. Good if you like heavy servings of ginger. The flavor shows thatthe ginger is somewhat restrained, thankfully. Wheaty, soft pale malt with a delicate honeyed presence. Not so much a honey flavor as a dash of sugary sweetness. Ginger all the way through, though not as potent (thankfully) as I was half expecting. A nice little prickle of gingery spiciness zests up the smooth, powdery finish. Plenty of yeast character, coming across as a doughy, sort of whole grain bread kind of feel with the malt. Definitely wheat or rye, adding a softening, dryish sensibility. Nicely balanced, with an understated gingery kick you might call elegant. Lightish bodied, with a powdered, fluffy texture. Zipy carbonation keeps things moving at a decent clip that's easy enough to follow.
A commendable effort on the part of Sammy Adams. Ginger is one of those "spices" I don't necessarily care to see in a beer, as it seems to become the bull in the china shop, but this one manages to avert disaster. Nothing I can imagine craving, but it's fun to try at least once. If this were very popular in colonial times, I might not be a big beer drinker. Enjoyable in the same anachronistic way a day at Olde Sturbridge Village is.

Had this beer in April of 2006:

Appearance: Light body and opaque. Golden color with a mildly lasting head.

Taste: Excellent balance of sweet and spice. Ginger overtones are perfect. Slightly hoppy taste.

Comments: Super refreshing beer, grear semmertime beer..
