The final contestant here in the Brewer Patriot Invitational is 1790 Root Beer Brew. After this matinée, the winner will be declared. Good luck to 1790 Root Beer, and on to it we go:

This brew is a copper-red color with lots of floating yeast colonies in the body. Head is tan and holds pretty well. Aroma is of licorice, vanilla, and ginger. Interesting taste, it's not overpowering sweet, but still reminds me of a good root beer. Notes of hickory, molasses, and powdery phenols. Despite it's root tasting aftertaste, I found this to be somewhat drinkable.

The final beer is finished, and now it's time to announce the winner of the Brewer patriot Invitational. And it is:

James Madison Dark Wheat Ale! Congratulations!

This was one of the most intriguing invitationals yet. Four beers which I though I'd never be able to review because of their release, but I found a box set for $20(!). Overpriced? I think so, but I suppose its better to pay the price and try them then not try them at all. Not great beers, but ones taking us back in time. You can trace back the invite and read what you missed. Good day everyone!

Review from October 2006:

Appearance: Opaque hue with a caramel look. Spice particles visible.

Taste: Strong spicy flavor with a syrupy finish. Syrupy after taste.

Comments: Not one of my favorites. A bit too much of a syrupy texture, more like a cider than beer. Very sweet with strong spicy note. Slight aroma of burnt ceder. Spicy aroma.

Putrid beer. Poured clear brown with a ton of floaties. Smallish white head. Aroma was pleasant. It smelled like a bitter root beer with star anise and ginger. Too bad the flavor was terrible. Like a licorice beer. I think the other flavors were actually roots. Earthy and sticky, but in a starchy, dirty way. Why?

Me and a friend split these Brewer Patriot Collection brews and this was by far the worst one. Neither of us finished ours. As i stated in reviewing the porter, I enjoyed drinking these thinking this is what our founding fathers drank but I could not bring myself to drinking this horrible brew

Taken from my old notes.

Pours a hazy amber, and by hazy do mean hazy, quite a bit of sediment, not much head and what is there goes quickly.

Has a very herbal smell, even has mint! Although I don't like mint, it is rather unique as I haven't run across many beers that use it.

Taste is a bit confusing, malty sweetness with herbal mintness and other psice, not exactly a pleasing combo. Each fights to remain on top and don't balance, can't really imagine how they could.

Off notes from 10-2006. Pours cloudy amber with large chunks of sediment floating around. Smell is just like a root. I completely do not like the taste. You get that root beer edge, but it is too sharp and too tangy on the end. Just too harsh overall I think. Flavors overpower the feel and it is definitely not that drinkable I believe. The second of the four out of the box I can’t finish.

Pours a hazy and dense bronze with a one-finger off-white head. Nose of sweet anise and mint, proven in the taste, with dominant earthy licorice, sweet vanilla, and herbal notes. The wintergreen mint lingers like toothpaste you haven't rinsed out. I love licorice and root beer but the mint is a little odd. Much respect for bringing it into (re-?)existence. Definitely worth a try but not much more.

Received as part of Secret Bunny '07 from cburian. Thanks Chris!

This one poured a light brown/amber colour, fair clarity. The (very) thin head did manage to stick around for quite a while and formed a bit of lacing. Whoa! That's an intense aroma! Very medicinal and herbal, spicy, licorice, sugary, like old fashioned root beer, quite minty too. The same kind of flavours happen in the flavour, but it starts out syrupy and sweet. Licorice and earthy middle, lingering mint. Syrupy body with lowish carbonation, kind of cloying. This is a really interesting beer and I kinda like it, but definitely one that's near impossible to finish alone. It does start to even out after a while - maybe my tastebuds were just burned away and I don't know it yet - but overall it's just way too intense. I can still detect the minty aftertaste, kind of like the lingering toothpaste flavour about 20 minutes after you've brushed your teeth. Cool experiment though.
