Named after the year when hard root beers soared in popularity with colonial drinkers, the brew features ingredients such as blackstrap molasses, sassafras root bark, dried wintergreen, and licorice.

Pours a slightly hazy deep amber with on off white heas that sticks around for a good amount of time.
The aroma reminds me of anise and rubber bands and there is a sweet maltyness that is overshadowed by the anise aroma. The brewers achieved what they were shooting for so I will give it some leeway but for me the anise is too much.
The taste is not very pleasent to my modern tastes but I am trying to taste this as if I was a person who drank pre-luis pasteur beers. The flavor begins with a dark flavor that I believe remids me of rubber but I think it is a blend of the dried wintergreen and the anise blended. I guess this is what an unsweetened root beer would taste like. This spicy flavor quickly segues into a nice vanilla flavor and finishes with a dark almost rummy taste and there is a touch of sweet carmel that i think comes from the malts. The flavor lingers into the finish and a slight herbal bitterness lingers as well.
The mouthfeel is nice and full for a beer made with both honey and molasses and I atribute this to experienced brewmasters.
I find this beer unenjoyable though I do like to taste new things so I would recommend this to anyone who likes to taste extreme beers. This is a prime example why homebrewers do what they do as It is a strange blend of ingredients that is way to extreme for most everyone but the brewer is probably very proud of it. I would not need to drink this again but I believe that every true beer lover should try and push the limits of their palates and to give this a try.

Review from October 2006:
Appearance: Opaque hue with a caramel look. Spice particles visible.
Taste: Strong spicy flavor with a syrupy finish. Syrupy after taste.
Comments: Not one of my favorites. A bit too much of a syrupy texture, more like a cider than beer. Very sweet with strong spicy note. Slight aroma of burnt ceder. Spicy aroma.
