Pours a dark brown hazy color with a big head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. There is a small amount of sediment in the bottle too.

Smells of wheat, malt, cloves, banana. The aroma is very reminiscent of Bavarian imports and is very pleasant.

Taste is of wheat, a slight sweetness with nice spiciness, roasted malt, cherry, banana with other fruits which I cannot identify. It seems pretty similar to the imported varieties to me . Drinkability is very good too. Overall this one is pretty good, and it is much better than I expected.

12oz bottle from the Fall Harvest Mix Pack served in a tumbler.

Hazed unfiltered bronze color with a creamy beige head that hung around as a layer and left a good deal of lacing spots.
Smell is earthy wheat and caramel sweetness.
Taste is malty with flavors of wheat, yeast, spices and very low bitterness.
Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a bit of a thin feel.
A refreshing drink but I'm not a big fan of the style.

One of two beers vying for year-round status within the Samuel Adams portfolio in their "Beer Lover's Choice" tasting competition. Out of four possible beers, this one made the cut. Consumer voting starts in August.

The head retention is decent. Good lace but not a whole lot of sticking, with a deep-hazed dark mahogany color from the dark malts and yeast. Mild estery aroma, with suggestions of brown bread; faint vanilla and white chocolate in the nose. Crispness is not shy, with a snap up front and a solid medium body. Spicy bite of wheat and a well-rounded toasted malt flavor from middle to end. Clean palate, with a mild fruitiness and neutral yeast character. Hops are very mild as well. Finishes a tad dry.

Not your typical Dunkelweizen, with generous banana and clove; oddly, we did not pick up on either of those traits, as it was a bit mellower or restrained, though still flavorful. That said, it's hard to pit this against the bells and whistles of your typical Dunkelweizen.

Pours a dark copper body with a rocky white head. Aromas of spicy yeast esters and toasted malts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a tingly level of carbonation. Flavors of sweet caramel and dried cherries. There's a very low bitterness in the finish. Pretty good drinkability.

I could fit almost two bottles of this in my weizen glass. A hazy rust color with a minimal to absent head.
Caramel malt, fruit, and spice aroma. Pretty good.
Mostly banana taste, some tropical fruit, clove, caramel.
A little bit on the sweet side.
I liked this beer, but I'm not in love with it. Maybe we'll just date occasionally.

The look is cloudy amber brown with a good head and lace. The look is cloudy and good.

The smell is spicy and yeasty with a sweetness of malt and banana.

The taste is yeasty banana with crystal sugar is it sweet and tart. The taste is a mix of honey mead, white wine and barley

Poured an extremely dark color when only held up to light, it would reveal a dim ruby hue. Nice dead that subdues after a while leaving minimal lacing. Smell is of roastiness like a stout with some lactose ala cream stout along with that banana-ry aroma. Beautiful aroma. Flavor also has that banana ester flavor up front ala Aventinus but also comes with a roastiness. This beer is like a cream/milk stout mixed with a dunkelweizen. Unlike anything I have ever tasted before and absolutely marvelous. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, medium carbonation and very smooth. Extremely drinkable. Wonder what the abv% is?

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Tawny and hazed, short yet thick looking head with a decent retention. Over-ripened bananas, powdered clove and toasted crackers in the nose. Big on smoothness with a slick crispness. Toasty maltiness is little sweet, some buttery diacetyl and ripe fruity banana hit harder in the middle. Quick bite of spicy clove. Some esters with a quick tartness middle to end with some more of the toasted maltiness in the semi-dry finish.

Not half bad, the buttery tone does take away from the other yeast characteristics my taste buds were waiting for.

Appearance: huge 1 inch plus head, cloudy, tan in color, moderate carbonation

Smell: banana, cloves, and wheat

Taste: banana, cloves, some toasted dark malt, and wheat

Mouthfeel: medium body, semi-sweet, with high carbonation

Drinkability: Another solid specialty offering from Sam Adams. This one is a bit on the sweet side, but is good for the style. If they released this in sixes, I would pick one up.

The beer pours a reddish-amber color with a white head. The aroma is basic dunkelweizen with some caramel, toffee, banana and clove notes. The flavor is more of the same with bananas and cloves, as well as some caramel malt, vanilla and brown sugar. Thin to medium mouthfeel, slightly water. Medium carbonation.

Appearance: Slightly hazy brown, with about one finger of an off white head.

Smell: Cloves, banana, and some wheat.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste sweet. I can taste clove, banana, some wheat and malts. After taste is an odd fruity flavor.

Overall: Not sure how I feel about this one, I guess it isn't bad, but not preference at all. I will drink what I have, but will not go out of my way to have this one again.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Summit pint/pilsner/weizen glass thing. I really don't know what their new glass is, but it is definitely multi-purpose.

Appearance: Cloudy dark orange without much head retention. Slight lacing.

Smell: Banana, pineapple, mango, clove and peppery hops. Some wheatiness underneath but the yeast really shines through.

Taste: Slightly sour wheat with strong cloves and light banana and other tropical fruits. Somewhat peppery finish.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body, dry (borderline sour) finish.

Drinkability: I have only had a couple Dunkelweizens but this seems quite good and true to style. Plus this is probably the best of Sam Adams' many (too many) wheat beers, just a notch above the Summer Ale and Winter Lager.

Since Sam Adams obviously knows how to make an authentic German Weizen, what the f*** is wrong with their Hefeweizen?

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. BB FEB 2013.

pours a hazy/ cloudy copper, orange/ brown color with about one fingers worth of off white head that fades to pretty much nothing within a minute, maybe leaving a ring for a bit.

the weizen yeast is at the forefront. banana like fruits, a bit of spicey clove. not much else, maybe a hint of dark breads and brown sugar.

tangy wheat, a bit of spice, clove, and banana from the yeast, slightly tart pear. slight hint of a dark bready flavor.

light and easy drinking.

not too bad of a dunkel, however this is definatly not one of my favorite styles. but they seemed to have nailed all the basics.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge five finger off white creamy head with good retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A yeasty, malty, and fairly spicy aroma. Wheat and Bavarian yeast with hints of bananas, clove, bubblegum, apple, pear, citrus orange, and a little nutmeg. Bready toasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, dark bread, and biscuit. Some earthy and spicy noble hops in the background. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma gives off, a nice sweet and complex flavor of wheat, malts, and spices. Wheat grains and yeast upfront with a taste of bananas, clove, apple, pear, bubblegum, nutmeg, and some orange. A nicely sweet taste of toasted malts with notes of dark bread, caramel, toffee, biscuit, and a subtle kick of roast chocolate. Some spicy noble hops help balance things out in the back end. After a few sips a light aftertaste of smoke lingers. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, crisp, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty good version of the Dunkelweizen style. Nice fruity esters and spicing. The smoke adds a interesting kick.

Poured into a New York New York wheat glass a hazey brown with a thick froathy head. The scent coming off of it is banana, cloves, and belgian yeast. Strong on the belgian yeast and spices. The taste isn't a strong as what the nose would lead you to expect. Everything that the nose found can be found on the tongue, banana, cloves, and belgian yeast. Add in some carmel and you've got a nice little dunkel here. But the flavors just don't have any pop to them. I would like to have some more sugary flavors in this. The mouthfeel is a little high in the carbonation.

The most exciting new release from Sam Adams in at least a few years. Compared to their hefeweizen this is a benchmark accomplishment. I squeezed the two bottles from the fall Harvest sampler pack to find one of the most inviting looking dunkelweizens I've seen in awhile. Big amber brown clouded body with a billowing cream tarnished head that rises above the rim of my 1/2 liter Ayinger weissbier glass. Lacing is even and fine with intricate detail, beautiful looking brew. Aromatics come with a touch of raisin and tart sliced green apples, a bit of clove, banana, and bubblegum as well. Even some mango juicy characteristics arise with further sniffs. A touch of herbal hops in the nose with a nice roasted malt edge on the biscuit and wheat malt profile. Flavor is perfect none of that traditional Sam Adams house yeast this one is authentic German weissbier yeast, brings out all of those great phenols. Juicy sweetness with roasted malt edge brings to mind brown sugar sprinkled banana bread with sliced green apple tartness, and mango fructose complexity. Herbal hops for balance with big yeast characteristics finishing sharply wheaty with drying yeast components. Mouthfeel is perfect with effervescence in the carbonation and medium to lighter bodied. Nothing cloying or heavy on the palate, perfect version of the style. Drinkability is crazy, a beer they will be successful with if released in six packs on it's own. Every once and in awhile the Samuel Adams Brewmaster's Collection hits a homerun, I'm glad I was here to experience it.

I've been slammin' Sam all week since I purchased his season sampler. I see a few others are on the same trail in reviewing brewskies.

This is a nice beer that is more like a german lager or a wheat bear. There is a nice hint of vanilla or banana sweetness that is offset by a nice citrusy lemon peel or grass that allows a nice refreshing and dry finish. Excellent balance. Good taste. Easy and refreshing to drink. Thumbs up.

Goes well with Pauline Oliveros electronic drone music.

Big light brown head quickly dies without leaving much lacing at all above a clear dark reddish honey colored beer.

Banana, light cloves, some wheat grain on a roasted caramel malt aroma.

Light caramel malt and quite a bit of banana with hints of the cloves coming through in the taste of this dunkelweizen.

A light dry aftertaste with a little bit of the banana and caramel hanging around on this medium bodied affair.

This is basically just a plain dunkel that isn't to fancy but doesn't suck at the same time. I guess if you wanna try the harvest variety pack you'll do alright getting two of these but I would suggest if you want to drink more of this style look to the European versions, you'll be more satisfied.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into my newly acquired Weihenstephan curvy weizen glass.

An inverted pour gives rise to a huge, fluffy head that lingers for a long time. Lacing is very slight, with the clinging bubbles sliding back down quickly. The brew itself is a reddish amber color that slightly reminds me of a marzen. There are a few lines of bubbles making their way easily up towards the head. For a dunkelweizen, it's remarkably clear. Smell is full of malts and fruitiness, along with nuances of cloves and spice and that banana that is so characteristic of weizen beers.

Malty to start off, along with the cloves and spice that are found in the nose. Banana is a bit more subdued, but is still present, as is the breadyness. Bit of a bubblegum snap as well that lingers into the aftertaste. Much like the way it looks, it's "cleaner" than your typical dunkelweizen in terms of flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy and nice, but not as chewy as I thought it should have been. Fair bit of carbonation too.

A very easy beer to drink thanks to the pleasing taste. Sam Adams did a great job on the Kellerweis hefeweizen, but I feel that they went a little too "safe" on this one. It's too clean in terms of looks and taste to stack up to its German counterparts, but is by no means a terrible dunkelweizen. A good, solid beer that's still head and shoulders above 90% of the crap sold out there.

Appearance - Slightly cloudy, amber color, white head, little retention

Smell - cloves, banana, fruity, no hop aroma

Taste - Wheat flavor, light fruit flavor, slight hop flavor

Mouthfeel - Good level of carbonation, medium body

Drinkability - Very drinkable, not a bad beer, appears too clear for an unfiltered weizen, perhaps a draw back from having it from a bottle.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy brown color with a small tan head on top with decent retention and sporadic lacing.

S: Lots of banana and some caramel and toffee. There was a little bit of yeasty spice, mostly cloves as well.

T: Mostly banana on the flavor profile, but not as strong as the nose indicated. There is some more spice, again predominantly clove. There is a little caramel and a hint of vanilla as well.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Pretty easy drinking for a dunkelweizen.

O: A pretty nice surprise. Thought this was a pretty good beer and actually worked well on the hot day I consumed it on.

Situation: Recovering from a three-hour family photoshoot at the mall...Glassware: Celebrator Doppelbock... Appearance: soft brown body that holds a healthy, thin, off-white head; little observable effervescence... Aroma: fresh malt softened by wheat; pleasantly subtle... Palate: soft, smooth, almost to the point of an oily consistency (in a good way); extremely drinkable... Taste: an almost bubble gum (!) like quality to the clove sensation that dominates; malts provide a pleasant underpinning... Overall: In a merging of styles, this is more weizen than dunkel--still, its finish, is sweet enoughto encourage a second bottle; within the fall sampler, this may be my selection to sixpack and savor...

Poured from bottle into SA Pint Glass

A - The beer pours a hazy dark orange / amber color. Slightly cloudy due to the yeast. Small white head that dissipates rather quickly.

S - Smell of clove very noticeable upfront along with some sweet fruit notes.

T - A lot of clove on the first sip. Sweet (banana) throughout with a bit of a tart finish at the end.

M - A little thin but not overly so, slight carbonation.

D - A very drinkable beer. I had this particular one from the harvest pack but I wouldn't say no to a sixer of this.

Overall a very solid fall brew from the BBC

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, dark amber with slight reddish hue. Head is off-white, one finger thick and with poor retention. Resulting lace is spotty, with most clinging for life on the edges.

Smell - Really nice aroma! Sweet caramel notes complimented by a healthy amount of banana and a faint touch of clove.

Taste - Doesn't quite hit on the promise of yeasty character that's presented to the nose, but it's still decent. Sweet and sugary, with brown sugar being most noticeable. Notes of caramel and banana hit, but not nearly where they should. Clove snaps in around midtaste and fades quickly before clinging faintly into the aftertaste. Finishes with nice balance, and a subtle wheat undertone.

Mouthfeel - Light in body, with a decent amount of carbonation giving it a fuller body than it probably has. Smooth and drinkable.

Overall - Not a bad effort from Sammy Adams here. It's no world beater, but it's certainly drinkable and somewhat enjoyable. A little more depth and complexity from the yeast would be nice, but I'm not complaining too much. It's the first dunkel I've had from an American brewery and so, by default, the best I've had this side of the Atlantic.

Served cool into a pint glass, SA dunkelweizen is a hazy dirty looking beer with thin short-lived head.

Aroma is full of banana and clove. Tropical fruit and spice in abundance.

Flavor is much the same with banana, bubble gum, and baking spices.

Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with appropriate carbonation.

Overall a nice and easy dark wheat beer. Not exceptional but not bad either.
