12-oz bottle into weizen glass

A - 2 fingers of khaki head over a cloudy body of orange-ish brown; medium carbonation visible; head goes fast leaving no lace

S - clove dominates, banana, wheat, almost a bubblegum quality

T - clove, banana, tropical fruits/bubblegum, toffee sweetness; lots of yeast and spice in the finish

M - medium body, medium/high carbonation, smooth and somewhat creamy

O - It's not bad if you enjoy the clove and banana character of the Bavarian yeast. Not really my thing, but it is what it is.

12 oz bottle poured into a weizen glass at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Deep amber color with a 2-finger bubbly head. Really nice retention and some good lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles. Looks good but where’s the haze?

S – Wheat and caramel malt with lots of banana esters and a good amount of clove phenols.

T – Starts sweet with caramel and wheat malts before spicy yeast comes in with lots of banana and clove notes and a little bit of bubblegum. Really tasty.

F – Medium-bodied with pretty good carbonation, a creamy and mouth-coating feel, and a sweet and spicy finish. Yeast peppery and clove spice lingers nicely.

O – This is actually a really terrific beer and a great example of the style. If it had a little more haze and a little more body, this would be at least a 4.5 all around. I am very impressed by Sam Adams on this one.

A - Copper in color with a thick head that dissipates to less than an in inch quickly. Very little lacing.

S - Smells of bubblegum, fruits, and malts.

T - Same as the smell for the most part. A lot of bubblegum and banana, along with malts and a hint of brown sugar.

M - Average mouthfeel. Not sticky, not watery.

O - I enjoyed this beer, but it wasn't memorable.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams cup

A- Clear amber body (too light for a style with the word "dark" in it), 3/4" off white head

S- Bubblegum, metal, spice, artificial banana, sharpy marker?

T- Bubblegum, artificial banana, citrus, metal twang, kind of watered down

M- Medium bodied, crisp carbonation

O- The yeast is front and center, dominating everything, after that the beer turns to water, most likely from the wheat dulling any malts or hops. Meh...

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. BB FEB 2013.

pours a hazy/ cloudy copper, orange/ brown color with about one fingers worth of off white head that fades to pretty much nothing within a minute, maybe leaving a ring for a bit.

the weizen yeast is at the forefront. banana like fruits, a bit of spicey clove. not much else, maybe a hint of dark breads and brown sugar.

tangy wheat, a bit of spice, clove, and banana from the yeast, slightly tart pear. slight hint of a dark bready flavor.

light and easy drinking.

not too bad of a dunkel, however this is definatly not one of my favorite styles. but they seemed to have nailed all the basics.

Poured into a Sam Adam's Perfect Pint glass.

Brownish amber with a 1/2 finger of head that dissipates pretty quickly. Just a tad hazy. low-moderate carbonation.

Tangy wheat, caramel, bread and clove.

Tangy wheat and banana peal. Lighter notes of banana bread and plantains. Very light essence of clove.

Light-medium bodied, crisp, clean and refreshing.

The wheat really outshines all the other elements in this beer. Very mellow and easy drinking, however it is lacking flavor. Average at best.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint because proper glass ware floats my boat. Caramel to amber color depending on where it sits in my glass. Silky blanket of retention left from a snow white tufted head.

Smells like cloves and apricot and a couple days until ripe banana. Tastes like cloves with a sour wheat tang in back. Mildly sweet and nutty. Bottle claims tropical fruit but that's a bit of a reach. Mouthfeel is fair but lacks any standout wheat beer creamy, smooth wheat beeryness.

From twelve ounce bottle freshness dated to February 2013.

Pours a nice coppery brown with thick long lasting beige head. Spotty lacing of the glass.
Taste is eclectic hints of honey, clove, fruit cake perhaps. Not overbearing though. Not at all bitter, very crisp. I'll have another!

Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams Glass.

Appearance: Slightly hazy brown, with about one finger of an off white head.

Smell: Cloves, banana, and some wheat.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste sweet. I can taste clove, banana, some wheat and malts. After taste is an odd fruity flavor.

Overall: Not sure how I feel about this one, I guess it isn't bad, but not preference at all. I will drink what I have, but will not go out of my way to have this one again.

12oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- light to medium brown/amber with a thin off white head, little lacing.

S- Big banana, bubble gum, and clove. A little over the top on those smells. Some slight hints of brown sugar and wheat malt.

T- The same smells that were over the top are completely over the top in the taste as well. Banana and bubble gum linger long after the sip. Some light brown sugar and wheat malt, but the taste is anything but balanced.

M - medium to pretty high carbonation, ends kind of dry. Light to medium bodied.

O- Disappointed. I like dunkelweizen's, but this one is just totally off kilter on the taste. Not horrible, but misses the mark a bit.

A: poured from 12 oz bottle (bbd Mar 13) into pint glass, poured golden brown with 1/2" off white head that fades leaving some lacing, hazy
S: wheat beer esters and complex alcohols, banana, brown sugar
T: this beer has a slightly unpleasant taste, notes of banana bread up front that quickly swaps to a sour skunky taste, finish is dry with a lingering odd aftertaste of bitter cloves
M: carbonation is correct for the style, light and refreshing
O: it would have been OK if BBC hadn't completely missed the boat on taste, maybe I got a bad bottle but this is approaching drain pour territory based solely on taste, the other good qualities cannot make up for that

A - Light brown pour with an active white foam. Little to no lacing.

S - Fresh scent of banana and clove. Some bready yeast smells is there as well. Light malty aroma.

T - Spicy bite gives to a sweet malt flavor. Fresh banana flavor similar to a good hefeweisen. There is a light sourdough flavor from the yeast.

M - Good drinking beer that is light boded and very enjoyable. I'd prefer a more traditional version of the style. This one seems to be a bit off balance. The spicy notes seem too prominant.

O - I found this a fun beer that made the fall sampler pack even better. While not the best in the pack (Hazel Brown is nice!), I'd be happy to try this again.

Pours a dark brown hazy color with a big head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. There is a small amount of sediment in the bottle too.

Smells of wheat, malt, cloves, banana. The aroma is very reminiscent of Bavarian imports and is very pleasant.

Taste is of wheat, a slight sweetness with nice spiciness, roasted malt, cherry, banana with other fruits which I cannot identify. It seems pretty similar to the imported varieties to me . Drinkability is very good too. Overall this one is pretty good, and it is much better than I expected.

12oz longneck
A) Pours with a finger thick head then settles to a thin lacing. Hazy bronze body.
S) Roasted malts. Hints of cherry. Caramel. Earthy.
T) Robust maltiness. Caramel. Apple. Cherry. Subtle yeasty tones. Pleasant spiciness in the finish.
M) Crisp. Medium light body. Dry and tannic in the finish.
O) A decent brew overall. I'd drink another one.

P:  Dark amber with a gentle haze and a bone colored frothy pillow top. Silky lacing that glides around the edges.

S:  Bavarian yeast displays over ripe bananas, mango, cherry alcohol, clove, nutmeg, plums, papaya, applesauce and roasted wheat.  Nice complex nose the blends well.

T/M:  Roasted wheat malt, tropicsl fruits, timid banana bread, clove, and nutmeg. Cinnamon applesauce hides in the background. Much more raw and rustic than the sweet nose. Medium-full body with a touch if stickiness and a brilliant prickly carbonation. Finish starts creamy and leaves dry with lingering apple peel and wheat bitterness.

O:  Complex and well blended. I haven't had too many dunkels but this IMO is pretty tasty. I picked up the harvest seasonal 12 pk and I think this is one of the better ones in the group.

Into a globe.

A - A mahogany brown with a rich ivory head. Poor retention and lacing.

S - Toasted malts and sweet bananas coat my nostrils. A rich juiciness which makes this quite nice.

T - Juicy fruits, lesser banana than I anticipated, alongside caramel malts and a bready melody.

M - Medium bodied with ample carbonation to set off the flavors.

O - This is a strong beer coming from America's rather poor inventory in this style. The German counterparts are indeed better, but this is not a failure.

Poured from a bottle into tumbler pint, the beer is a clear, hazelnut coloring with no lick of head whatsoever. Aromas of clove spicing, malty sweetness of caramel and toffee, and an overall roasting. Flavors are sweet, with a toffee and caramel backbone that is kept in check by the light, carbonated body. Roasty, warmly spiced characteristics. The aftertaste is sugary sweet, with some balance from spicing, but the sweetness wins out. Sharp, effervescent in mouth at the end, with a slight sweet linger.

Served from bottle into a shaker. Poured brown with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount very quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bread, wheat, and grain. The flavor was of sweet malt, bread, wheat, grain, and earth. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. While this was a decent example of the style, it really didn’t stand out from others I have had. There were some good things going on here with the bread and wheat, but also some things that it could have done without as in the earthiness. While it was nice to have something different going on, it can also hurt a brew unfortunately. Worth trying at least once to judge for yourself, but I doubt I will be having it again if I am completely honest as there are better easy to get ones out there.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge five finger off white creamy head with good retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A yeasty, malty, and fairly spicy aroma. Wheat and Bavarian yeast with hints of bananas, clove, bubblegum, apple, pear, citrus orange, and a little nutmeg. Bready toasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, dark bread, and biscuit. Some earthy and spicy noble hops in the background. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma gives off, a nice sweet and complex flavor of wheat, malts, and spices. Wheat grains and yeast upfront with a taste of bananas, clove, apple, pear, bubblegum, nutmeg, and some orange. A nicely sweet taste of toasted malts with notes of dark bread, caramel, toffee, biscuit, and a subtle kick of roast chocolate. Some spicy noble hops help balance things out in the back end. After a few sips a light aftertaste of smoke lingers. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, crisp, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty good version of the Dunkelweizen style. Nice fruity esters and spicing. The smoke adds a interesting kick.

With all the beers I've had, this is going to be a style tick. Dunkelweizen has never sounded like a beer style that'd appeal to me, so I've avoided them. Two in the newest Sam Adams seasonal pack has left me with no choice, so here we go.

Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen pours a copper color with a small head. The aroma is just what I feared it would be. Clove and banana, my two least favorite beer flavors coming in for the tag team. The taste is more restrained than the nose, with roasted barley and caramel malts working with the banana and slight clove flavor, along with some nutmeg. The mouthfeel is light and velvety, and the drinkability is decent. Not my favorite Sam, but it's probably a decent representation of a style that isn't really for me.

Served in a weizen glass.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy amber, with an off white (maybe 1/3") had that look to have an orange tint to it. The bubbles pressed against a light pretty heavy.

Smell: You know what it smells like toasted bread meets light banana. It is light though and wish I could rate this gem a little higher.

Taste: I have had similar beers and this one is a gem. Little sweet but still bitter has banana plus a caramel feel to go with it.

Mouth: Smooth, little sweet after taste but still smooth. The honey after-feel to it is absolutely no lie.

Overall: This beer is the really GOOD...not perfect but considering how easy it is to get and the quality brew that it is, love it. Hope you enjoy as much as I did...Salud!

A- Red-Copper. Fairly clear (surprisingly for a weizen), head is thin and creamy. Good retention. Minimal lacing,
S- Banana, clove, toast, a bit of dark bread.
T- It's a buttered toast flavor up front. Banana and clove come in. Long finish that has a bit too much caramel and not enough banana/clove.
M- Body was slick at first, but it's overcarbed leaving an unpleasant feel.
O- I like to see breweries take a shot at dunkels. This one is merely ok.

Pours a muddy light brownish mixed with copper. The half finger of head dissipates quickly, but leaves some sticky lace on the glass. The nose is troublingly reminiscent of burnt hair. The flavor is certainly better than the taste as this offering has three distinct tastes that follow one another. First, there is a dry character present. Second, a touch of sweetness comes on in the middle. Finally, this offering has a tart finish that is not totally pleasing to the palate.

The beer is a murky, copper color with a thick, eggshell colored foamy head. The aroma is dominated by clove and banana with some pineapple and toffee in the background. It tastes kind of metallic, other than that you get the fruity banana and clove spice with lots of wheat. It's medium bodied with lots of carbonation. Overall this beer is pretty average, I think they could have done better.

A - Molasses body, slightly hazy with low carbonation. Little to no head, just a white ring with some blotchy retention. Little to no lacing. The color is the only thing it's got going for it.

S- Sharp unripe fruit, banana

T- Follows the nose, slightly more complex though. Wheaty upfront, finishes with notes of banana and citrus. Rich

M- Medium-high carbonation, medium body. Crisp

Overall a unique, refreshing brew. Worth a try
