Sometimes a beer from this style really reaches out and grabs me, but this isn't one of those times. SA's take on this style is impressive, with a full, authentic taste, but it lacks that special thing that the best of these have.

Still, this has a nice yeasty taste and aftertaste that insure that you know you are drinking a serious beer. The aroma doesn't quite match but there are not flaws here either.

I won't avoid this in the future but I also won't go out of my way for it.

Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen
12 oz brown bottle
Enjoy by February notched off on the side label
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass

Pours a light brown with a mini khaki colored head on top. Surprisingly, there are minimal trails of sticky lacings after a few sips.

Funky yeast aroma with obvious whiffs of banana and fruity notes.

A malty backbone with sweet caramel malt flavors and distinct banana & bubble gum on the finish. Other flavors that are often associated with this style of beer such as cloves are detectable as well.

A middle-of-the-road interpretation of the style and a tad watery for what I would like.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Murky pumpkin color with lots of carbonation and a finger of white head. Slightly sticky lacing.

S: Sweet bananas and cloves is all I'm really getting.

T: Regular American hefe flavors but with a bigger malt bill: bananas, cloves, some nutmeg. Sweet, but not cloyingly sweet. Sort of boring.

M: Medium-high carbonation with a spicy finish.

O: Definitely drinkable, but not something I'd ever seek out by SA. Not really sure how this works into the fall seasonal pack, would like to see it removed and replaced with something else.

Out of the Fall Sampler Pack

A- Dark brown with a small white head that leaves a small amount of lacing

S- Tons of banana with some caramel notes in the background. Smells awesome

T- Caramel malts take the front with some clove and banana in the background. Really solid almost dessert beer

M- Awkward place between smooth and prickly. Could use some work here

O- I enjoy this beer and would certainly accept some of it. IDK if I'd purchase a 6er of it however

Appearance: a deep amber with some transparency thanks to the light filtering. Pours an inch of dense foam that settled with minimal lacing

Aroma: Strong cloves up front. Gives way to some banana esters (but not too much). Caramel malt also noticeable.

Flavor: banana esters and wheat dominate initially. subtle bitterness from hops. the caramel malts come through towards the end.

Mouthfeel: Little bit on the light side for the style, but quite drinkable because of this. The carbonation is pretty good. Somewhat creamy texture develops, but still has a dry finish.

Overall: An enjoyable beer that is one of the best American representations of the style I have tried (only 2 or 3 to be fair). Not quite as full-bodied or carbonated as some I've had in Munich though.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a cloudy amber/honey color with a large fluffy white head which disappears quickly. Aroma, right off the bat is the expected banana and clove with mild citrus notes. Taste follows suit, strong banana and citrus flavor, mild clove. Slightly fruity and malty sweet. Has medium carbonation, not enough for a true weizen. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, medium light in body. This beer I feel is only called a dunkel because it's too dark for a hefe, and there is no amber category. I prefer my dunkels to be more black, and I was surprised when I first poured this beer at it's amber color. It's a good wheat beer, but not a great one.

Bottle: Poured a clear amber color dunkel with a large foamy had with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of banana cake ester are pretty strong with light sweet notes and some what malt. Taste is a good mix between banana bread ester with light cloves and some light wheat malt notes also discernable. Body is a bit light for the style with good carbonation. Nice work on the yeast strain with huge ester but lacking body and malt profile is a bit weak for the style.

Best by December 2012:

This is my first dunkelweizen for review:

Into a weizen:

A: deep dark brown colored body with some amber notes along the edges of the glass. A large one finger foamy white head appears and lasts for a good two minutes. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. No lacing is around the sides of the glass.

S: some wheat and banana up front with a bit of honey in the background.

T: basically the same with some added spice.

M: medium with a slight harshness of carbonation, sessionable.

O: an interesting style that I do not know much about just yet other than homebrews and failures to write down notes on other commercial brews, I`ll come to this personally to note changes
