I accidentally confused this with a local politician and bought a bottle thinking I was supporting his campaign.
For real though, I picked up a bottle of this wondering what a hoppy imperial pils might taste like. The bottle cap is one of the coolest I've seen in a while, though the label looks a little like Pinkus or Samuel Smith. Pours a turbid copper with a sharp white cap of foam. Carbonation is either ample or I have a dirty pils glass. Or both. Activity lasts 10 minutes then the head settles down to a thin layer of minuscule bubbles. The body remains cloudy.
The aroma is entirely unique to my olfactory experience. The hallertau produce a bizarre dirty, meaty and almost stale aroma that despite it's uniqueness, is almost off-putting. The novelty is enough, and puzzling enough that I can't stop sniffing to try and pinpoint what the smell is.
The taste is big, tart, and heavy. Instead of the hoppiness and maltiness balancing, they seem like they're both pushing in different directions, so theres a somewhat bland middle. It's not bad at all, but the two ingredients do not compliment each other like I'd hoped.
It improves as it warms, but it's really an evening of it's own. It'll dry your palette with the bitterness, which reduces the drinkability.

This beer is sorely missed! It was the first hop monster I had, and I had it at a time when I was not keen on the hop--much more into the malty beers. But this was a home run with me right off the bat. I wish Jim Koch and team would make it again. Anyone know if they will?
In short, this beer is so dry and yet so creamy. Quite an amazing beer!
