A: Cloudy, dark orange with a white head. Beautiful lacing on the glass.
S: I could sniff this one all day. Sweet, piney notes mixed in with plenty of citrus fruit, i.e. grapefruit and lime. The Hallertau oils are in full effect.
T: Extremely balanced lager. It's crisp and hoppy, but also fairly sweet and malty. Aftertaste is verging on the hyper bitter.
M: Very solid. The hops set the gums and palate alight, carried about by the ample carbonation. Nothing light about this one. Wait, there is a lager lightness to this, different than an ale.
D: Imperial indeed. Somehow the 8.1% abv are quite noticeable. This and the lingering bitterness make this a 1 btl/session kind of beer. Nothing wrong with that, but 'tis only a 12oz bottle after all. Normally this kind of buzz sets while dealing with a brown bomber, 22oz bottle.
First time I've tried this style and I like it a lot. A strong lager that is not a doppelbock or an alcobrew like Carlsberg Elephant Beer. Good stuff, Boston Beer Co!
