Deep amber in color, glowing maroon when back lit with a creamy light tan head that fades to a thin cover leaving some think fingers of lacing that slide down the glass.
The aroma has light pumpkin and a stronger than first whiff suggested smell of pumpkin pie spices.
There is a good helping of cooked gourd in the flavor and as with the aroma the spices are stronger than on the first sip. Spice flavors include cinnamon, ginger and cloves A mellow brown ale seems to be the base for this beer with a nice freshly toasted bread background.
The mouthfeel is on the heavier end of medium, actually a touch chewy, smooth and improves upon warming even just a bit. Initially the beer seemed a bit flat but warming seems to allow the mild carbonation to take it's place.
I either like pumpkin beers, like Smuttynose Pumpkin or dislike them, like Post Road (imperials are a different matter!). I like this beer, it is smooth and satisfying, has pumpkin flavor but isn't too overpowering with the spices. Definitely one I would want to drink again.
