From the fall variety pack, pumpkin beers seem to be coming out earlier and earlier. Not entirely appropriate for warmer August weather, but what the hell.
Roasted chest nut brown in appearance with a faint off-white head. Looks warm and comforting, but also has some lousy retention and zero lacing...
Aromas are mostly that of the spice cabinet: some cinnamon, allspice, clove and nutmeg with the faintest hints of pumpkin. Some malt presence as well, but the spices seem to dominate.
The taste is disappointing, a bit watery with obvious spice notes and mild pumpkin to counteract the malts. They were probably trying to be more subtle with the flavoring, but I'm really underwhelmed as the pumpkin in this is almost absent.
Medium bodied, but the overkill on the spice really hurts this beers drinkability. I wouldn't want more than one in a sitting.
Pumpkin beers seem all the rage with breweries now a days, but this is not one of the better examples. Less spice and more pumpkin is needed here. For the very definition of what this style can do, check out Southern Tier Pumking,

Poured from the bomber into a Sam Adams laser-etched glass.
Review from notes: January 18th, 2014.
A: Copper with thin white head. Good retention, some bubbles.
S: Pumpkin. Nutmeg and clove.
T: Sweet pumpkin, minimal spices. Very drinkable.
M: Nice carbonation, thin mouthfeel.
O: Good. I wasn't excited about this beer (it was in a fall sampler), but it wound up being a nice surprise. The best description for this beer is its name, "pumpkin ale". It tastes like an ale injected with pumpkin juice.
