On tap at LA Beer Week in Union Station. Tucked in a far away corner of the event sits lonely Sam Adams. Why venture over there, I ponder. Boy, am I glad I did. Went back 3x during the event and received a good 4 oz pour each time. Murky, hazy reddish brown and essentially still in the taster glass. Nose is really complex with a woody oak, stone/earth, fruit, funk mixture. Taste is sharply biting but not too tart. Oh, this is something special. Is that a hint of brandy? Picking up some sour and sweet cherries. A mother funk of wild yeast for sure! Wow, can't get over this one. Taste is simply everything mixed in a big jumble and smooth as silk. Mouthfeel is big and moderately tart with a tannic bite on the finish. Overall, the only selection which received a repeat visit that day. Tip of the hat, Jim.

Had this on tap at the American Craft beer festival. Served in a tasting glass.

A dirty brown body and an off-white head

S very distinctive cherry smell in the front

T sour, lemon, grain aftertaste is there as well

M medium

D not bad offering from Sam's. Unusual for them because it certainly pushing the envelope. I would drink this again.

Poured from the tap into a tasting glass.

The color is a dark drown/bronze with a finger of foamy off-white head and some lacing left on the glass.

The smell is a bit sour cherry and has a twangy bit of funk in it.

The taste is a bit fruity with more sour cherries and some tart lemon-like flavor. Some bready malt flavor does come out a bit to smooth this out a bit toward the end.

The feel of this beer is light at first with some bubbles making it feel well carbonated but is has a smooth feel that it seems to go too quickly.

From 09/09/11 notes. Had on tap at Night of the Funk.

a - Pours a deep reddish purple color with an inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of some sour raspberries and cherries, fruity malts, and light bread.

t - Tastes of sour cherries and raspberries, sour dark fruits, wood, light bread. Light brett/funk, but not a ton.

m - Medium body and light to moderate carbonation.

o - Overall a nice wild ale from Sam Adams. Some definite sour dark fruits, though I was disappointed by the level of funk given the name. Easy to drink considering 10% ABV. Would like to try it again.

Poured out as a reddish looking brown color with a thin white head on top. The smell of the beer has a good amount of funky and pungent aromas coming off of the beer. The taste of the beer is sour upfront, as you drink it though the sour qualities subside just a little making this beer a little more earthy and gives off a touch of wood in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is decently carbonated, it went down pretty nicely. Overall it's not a bad sour ale.

Had at American Craft Beer Fest in Boston on 6/18/2010.

Looks unassuming. Reddish brown. Minimal head.

Smell is promising: I'm thinking Flemish Red based on the aroma. Sour and a little sweet.

And a sip... nice! This is somewhere between a Belgian and an American sour, in my mind. Sour fruit, with maybe a bit of fresh hop, and a little sweetness keeping the sour in check. Very refreshing for a beer with this much flavor. It has that great palate-cleansing power; the sour is intense without going over the top.

I'd love to have more and analyze it in more detail, but sadly I don't think it will happen any time soon!
