From a 12 oz bottle with incomprehensible date stamp on neck… we don’t need no stinkin’ date stamps…. Into my Sam Adams glass (Thanks, guys!), it’s an engine oil brown color allowing no light penetration. Thick two finger solid head of coffee-foam yields good retention as it slowly fades leaving solid lacing along the glass. Nose of charred malts, fresh coffee, baker’s chocolate and cherry candy. On the palate it’s bitter chocolate-coffee up front tempered by bits of milk chocolate and hints of dark fruit. It’s big and bitter. Dry, bitter, end. Alcohol is well masks but asserts itself at the end. Mouth is a bit “foamy”, smooth, watery, and surprisingly not bubbly; not chewy either.
Overall, the overly bitter flavor profile detracts from an otherwise big and fairly complex brew. I’ve definitely had better, namely Stone RIS, Oskar Blues Ten Fidy, and Great Divide Yeti. Worth a try.
