I'll admit I was disappointed when I learned the Blackberry Witbier had won over the coffee stout so I'll admit I'm a little biased in writing this review. However I decided to give the Blackberry Witbier another try and pick up a 6-pack. Plus, the purple labels are pretty unique.

Appearance: Cloudy, hazy gold, full white head. Looks like a witbier. Nice representation of the style.

Smell: An astringent berry smell. Quite unpleasant.

Taste: Medicinal, very much like cough syrup. Although I'm drinking it in January, this wouldn't be refreshing in the middle of summer.

Mouthfeel: medium body, difficult to keep in mouth very long due to the unpleasant taste.

Drinkability: Poor. I had a difficult time finishing 12 oz and was angry at myself for buying a six-pack.

Overall: I'm normally a huge fan of all things Sam Adams. Although many do not like the Cranberry Lambic or Cherry Wheat, I feel that they are have their place depending on the time of year (I really associate the Cranberry Lambic with the holidays). Perhaps Sam Adams was trying to create another fruit-forward refreshing offering for the summer months, but this is by far their worst offering. It just tastes too much like berry-flavored cough syrup. You may want to try a bottle for the novelty, but I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on a 6-pack.

This is just not beer!

It looks like beer. Golden color, well carbonated though the head doesn't stay. A hint of hazy body but fairly clear.

It smells like some kind of fruity kids beverage. Just straight blackberry and sugar aromas.

It tastes like some awful mix of that kids drink and beer. Fruit adjunct flavors with a rather poor tasting grainy base beer.

It feels like a beer. Well carbonated and lively on the tongue. Rather drinkable if you can get past the flavor part.

Sam Adams cranks out more styles and more beers than just about anyone so I suppose we can give them slack for making a few bad ones, but this one just is down right terrible.

pours clear??? gold with 2 finger head that left no lacing

smells like blackberry soda

tastes like blackberry soda

mouthfeel was a little flat

drinkability not good

what was sam adams thinking here - a very poor fruity example of the style - they should brew the longshot cranberry wit instead

12 oz bottle best by November 2010.

Hazy with an appropriately wheat-like color and a solid white cap, this would look spot-on but it's a bit dark for the style. Could be my imagination, but it seems like there's a faint shade of purple in the center.

Pretty medicinal blackberry aroma with some malted wheat and slight spiciness backing it. These fruit wheat beers usually end up smelling like cough syrup, and this one is no exception.

Bready up-front, fruity and medicinal thereafter. Citrus peel and coriander spiciness is present beneath the fruit, which clashes a bit with the tart berry flavor. Mouthfeel is a bit heavy and cloying between the chewy wheat malt, the fruit and the spices. Not particularly enjoyable, this one's going down the drain.
