Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Appearance: extremely dark brown hue with plenty of haze. Head poured a rather inconvenient four (!) fingers of rich tan foam. Nice.
Smell: big malt with a huge smoky, medicinal character. Is this an Islay Scotch ale? I like it a lot, if it is a bit one-dimensional.
Taste: big malt flavor with some Imperial Stout-like roasty and alcoholic fruit flavors. The smoke remains heavily evident -- a bit much, I would say, even for the style. Still, quite tasty -- I don't see enough real smoke in big beers; I like it.
Mouthfeel: big body with a good carbonation and a silky smooth creaminess. It works well for me.
Overall: this is a huge beer with a giant smokiness which is really too much for the style. That said, it's a smooth, smoky, malty monstrosity which, style be damned, I personally really like. Kudos to Boston Beer Co!
