12 ounce bottle, 20 ounce nonic.
A - Great look, copper penny color with perfect clarity. Nice sized off white head that leaves rings of lace on the glass.
S - Nice aroma of hops, spicy noble hop aroma with a tiny earthy kick, and some sweetness to back it up.
T - Nice hop bitterness balances out the ample malt flavor. Hop flavors are big here, but it's a spicy characteristic and some more of that earthy taste. The malt sweetness is big but held in check. A different kind of hop taste than most Am. IPA fans are used too, but nice all around with some tea like flavors in the aftertaste.
M - Medium in body, nice and smooth.
D - This is a nice, smooth beer. Not what most expect from an American IPA, but that's not what Mr. Koch and Co. were going for. Either way, it's a nice, hoppy brew with an ABV on the lower end for the style that makes you want more.
Notes: I saw a video some time back where Jim Koch explained that the goal of a brewer should be to make "one of a kind beers." This is pretty damn distinctive. As an IPA fan I wanted to see BBC brew one, but I also knew they owuldn't go after the typical citrus bomb that's been done before. This is an IPA that, while I won't reach for it every time as I love West Coast IPAs and APAs, fills a niche in that it is truly an exhibition of hops from the world over. It uses hops from the US, England and Germany and produces a hop flavor that I'm not sure I'e found before. In fact, it seems like the German hops are at the forefront, which would normally be a no-no for the style, but it definitely works here. It's almost like an Alt with a drier flavor and a more subdued sweetness and I'm loving it. Solid and innovative beer from BBC
