This is actually a fine attempt by Sam Adams but unfortunately it does fall short of most other IPA's I've had.
A: Pours a really nice dark amber with a sticky half-inch head and some lacing. Looks great and reminds me of Troegs Amber IPA, "Nugget Nectar".
S: Actually, there's some all right hopping going on here. The smell's pretty good by my standards, although still lacking the sheer force that most decent IPA's have.
T: The taste is where we start to run into problems. I must say, this beer is profoundly bitter. I've had 105 IBU beers before and most all of Stone Brewing Co.'s stuff and this stuff takes the cake because there's not enough other flavors and all you're left with is very bitter beer. Where are the hops in the flavor? This is a trend with SA beers, I find. They'll have a really nice smell but there's no flavoring hops there to support things and the taste is, to summarize, bitter and watery.
M: The mouthfeel is ruined by the bitterness of this beer, plain and simple, otherwise, it would be fine.
D: Despite my qualms about this beer's bitterness, I'll still admit that it's doing all right in the drinkability department, like all SA beers.
Look, SA made a nice effort here but almost anything is better. If you're new to beer and can get any of the following in your area, you need to try them first:
Southern Tier IPA
Bell's Two-Hearted Ale

12 oz bottle poured into a lager glass.
A - Deep clear amber. Two inch head with excellent retention. Nice lacing.
S - Citrus, pine, and sweet malt.
T - Citrus, honey malt,and pine.
M - Medium
O - My favorite from the Hopology Collection. A perfect balance of sweetness and hops without the nasty bitterness. I highly recommend this brew.
