Funny thing, growing up. All of the old ways of life fade and become but a memory, and you make new ones, but never is there a return to who you were when you were young... You're older now. You've seen life, you've known pain and searing loss, you've had many a beer. They can bring back memories, but never yourself at the time.
So this one, pours a mahogany like so much maple syrup over the pancakes your dad used to make... at least I hope he did. Those were some of the best days, the Saturdays when Dad was home, cooking pancakes for the family... a rich, amber liquid with a finger of head on top (perhaps you put whipped cream on yours? Then that, I suppose, though a bit more soapy... almost like homemade whipped cream... a thinner, more cream colored version rather than the sterile white)... And the lace clings to the side like so many snowflakes on a window on a cold morning...
The aroma, then, there's a bit more of that maple-syrup or molasses, a clean, earthy aroma with a balanced hopping... a tinge of grapefruit amongst the waves of pine.
The flavour is balanced as well, though a bit more grapefruit bitterness there, especially in the finish. The malt of maple and a bit of molasses in the back, maybe even a hint of wood, almost an oak-barrel vanillin there. Actually I'm pretty certain of it, a smidge of vanilla. Nice.
The body is medium and the carbonation is as well, while the bitterness leaves a bit of dry lingering bitterness in the finish.
There's only forwards now, I suppose, now a wife of my own and it's up to me to create the memories for mine that I've had the incredible pleasure of thinking back on all these years. Don't just drink something, experience it. Let it flood you with thoughts, feelings and memories, it's all the better for enjoyment. And do what is in your power to create those lovely maple-syrup mornings in the cozy breakfast room in the cold winter... take the time to cook a hot breakfast, to savour the moments... you never know which one may last forever in the mind of someone you love.
